I don`t know how I managed to fish with out a kicker. After having my Lund tiller which I thought worked well not great but well for trolling. Now having a Johnson 9.9 4 stroke on my new to me boat and using it this summer. I can`t even imagine going on the water with out a kicker.

Dustin still said it best…the only thing a kicker will do is help you catch more fish. I am now a firm beleiver even though I have an awfull lot to learn.

Can`t wait until I can step up to T-8.

    I love my ’75-6h.p.kicker.
It’s a long shaft, old school.
Don’t know what I’d do with
    something that new. Wanna trade?

A kicker motor is a MUST in my mind. I put more hours on my kicker than I do my bigger motor. I can troll all day using only 3 gals of gas with my kicker. Using my 90 hp motor would use around 15 gals of gas. Thanks a very big savings everyday and especially with high gas prices. Want to fish alot more with a much lower gas bill? Buy a kicker, which will last forever almost if you take good care of it, and you will be able to. And if you can’t afford a 4-stroke kicker, don’t worry. A 2-stroke kicker [mine is a Johnson 8 hp 2-stroke] will cost less and work just fine.
    Thanks, Bill

I love my T8! When trolling cranks on Mille Lacs, speed is so important. I credit a lot of my success to that motor.

OK since you guys started the thread. I have been using my bow mount for years to troll in my 1800 pro-v.
I have a 2-stroke 6 horse at home that I usually use for duck hunting on the john boat but hey what the heck it should work as a kicker right?

This is a tiller style motor and I think I could tie this in to my 150 opti for stearing and I am not sure about the gas or throttle portion.

Can any of you guys advise me on Steering, Gas and throttle?

I think you will get numerous answers to this question depending on where they fish.

My kicker I use the tiller handle when doing short trolling runs, wingdams etc. If I am in open areas I set the speed on the kicker and set the steering so the boat runs straight. Then just use the big motor like a rudder to steer.

I’m with ya, Tom. I run a 115 Merc, but my 15hp 4 stroke Yammy is THE motor on my boat. I do love it; it’s so quiet and will troll all day long and not hesitate a bit. It’s helped me catch quite a few fish since I started utilizing it more.

    Shannon,

you can get a steering rod to connect the 2 together for under $30.00, Now that would allow you to steer at the tiller and from the helm. As far as speed goes you either need to adjust at the kicker or buy a Trollmaster. Give me a PM if you have any ?’s.

    Great information guys!
I have now inspected my little six horse and it looks like its going to work great for the job! I have a questions left to complete this task.

    1. There is actually a cable guide and exterior nub on the outside of the motor to hook up for the throttle linkage. Were do I purchase these cables that would match this motor?

    2. I assume I could get the like between the main motor and kicker at the same place?

These are kind of Rookie questions but I am into doing things myself and there is only one way to learn.
