Just curious at what most people use for trolling speed?? I know some use the wheel from the depth finder and others use GPS and I really dont know what is more accurate. Any opinions?? Thanks

GPS, wil always be more accurate. the more satelites received, the more accur your position, and speed readouts.
    and it updates constantly…

Gps is the only consistant speed read you will get. If you have a wheel watch it as you turn the boat around or if you are in current, the speed will be way off. I bought a handheld gps and use it only for boat speed but for me it was worth it especially for trolling charts. Just my thoughts on the subject.

    Wheel.

    No wait… GPS….

    uhh… is this multiple choice.

Only kidding. GPS is really accurate. I have my H20C set up on the dashboard of my truck. reads to within 1 mph (if not dead accurate).

GPS for sure but back when I used to use the hand held GPS I would match my speed to the paddle to give me a idea on how fast I was going

I know the guy who won the Nebraska walleye championship back in ’00 or ’01, and he swore on using his wheel for all speeds, especially lindy rigging and what little trolling he did. But this is one I definitely had to disagree with him on.

GPS, the only way to go.

    Now that was funny!

Throw the wheel away. I have 2gps’s, hand held magellan and mounted Lowrance, and they check within .1 mph with each other.

I used to use both before bumping a deadhead and losing my wheel. For fishing the river, I checked the difference between the two to get an idea of how fast the current flow was in a given area. It was actually quite useful, as slight adjustments in current made all the difference in numbers and quality of fish on some days.
I may just have to replace that paddle wheel come to think of it.

Both digital GPS and digital wheel devices are both going to be effected by lake effect currents. Both measure boat speed not lure speed. Analog gauges presented at the depth of the lure are the most accurate for trolling speeds.
