Just getting into using leadcore and bought my first setup and unsure of how to spool the line. I think you put some backing mono on the spool then spool the lead then back to a leader. What kind of knot is used to attach the line?? Also how many colors of lead do most people spool on there reels?? Thanks!!

Lead Core Setup??

I run a full spool width of mono tie a knot in the end of the lead then just a trilene knot to attach to the lead. On my Okuma’s I get 5 colors with some room to spare. I also attach my leaders in this manner and haven’t lost a fish yet. I run 30′ 10/2 fireline leader with a snap on the lure end.
I just started leading last fall myself, I can trul;y credit it to catching fish on days nothing else would go. Good Luck
July 29, 2007 at 3:09 am #595014I tie the leadcore directly on the spool. Then spool it up to mostly full. I then use an Albright knot to attach the mono leader. Right, wrong, or indifferent that is what I have had the best luck with
July 29, 2007 at 3:31 am #595021I also run all lead no mono backing, the peel enough braid back to tie a not remove the lead from the braid, tie on a small swivel , tie on a 4 to 5 ft braided leader, i use 20 lb. then a snaploc. I like to use a small enough swivel that it will go through your eyes when its reeled up. trilene knots will work,I like to leave them kind of loose and slide them down all the way , then snug them up tight.
July 29, 2007 at 1:37 pm #595049Your lead core set up will have many dependencies.
The size of my reel, the typical depths I’m looking to target, whether or not I’m going to use a planer board will dictate how I do it.
For example, while fishing Mille Lacs, I’m never going to encounter deeper water than 35 feet. Therefore I do not need to have more than 4-6 colors on my spool. I also need to account for how long of a leader I’m going to put on. I use long leaders (usually mono) sometimes up to 50′. I do this for a couple of reasons. The first is because I believe when using a shorter leader, the crankbait may loose some of its swimming action due to the weight of the leadcore line being close to the crankbait. The second reason is because leadcore line is pretty thick and visible and it may scare some fish away.
If I’m straight lining, a typical set up for me is a 30-50′ mono leader, 4-5 colors of leadcore and mono or braided backing (cheaper than leadcore).
If you are going to use planer boards and leadcore, you need to do segmented lead core. A typical set up for me is 30-50′ mono leader, 3-5 colors of leadcore (depending on the depth I’m targeting) and then braided (or mono) back to the spool. This will allow me to clip the planer board to the braided line and not the leadcore line.
I use blood knots. They tie very small (which allows them to go through my eyelets) and they are very strong. I’ve never broke one off.

I (like Todd Carnes stated above), also peel back the line about a foot and get rid of the lead before tying.
July 29, 2007 at 5:06 pm #595072Thanks for the tips as this will be helpful and cant wait to give it a try here. I think I will put on 4 colors which should get me down 40 feet right? Of course I think this is highly dependent on speed.

Figure 4-5 of depth per color of core. Speed, current, and lure will all be variables. WTA
July 31, 2007 at 1:57 pm #595595I like to run the diawa 47’s with the lead tied right to the reel. I fill the reel and cut off one color.
I fill the hole reel not because I fish SUPER deep water but because at the end of the year I take the lead off tie the used side back onto the reel and I have 5 new colors of lead for year #2.
I have aways done best with fireline leaders.Thats how I have run my lead for a few years now and has worked well!!
Good Luck hope this helps..
August 2, 2007 at 12:07 am #596210What pound test line do you guys like to run??? I am running 18 lb now to try and cut back on line drag in the water but havnt run much lead to compair with. Thanks!
les_welchPosts: 1007August 2, 2007 at 11:55 am #596338Being in the walleye forum, I am thinking you will be walleye fishing only. If, however, you plan to fish salmon and trout, go with the #27. It will have slightly more drag, but you will achieve the same depths as the #18, and have the stronger line for the bigger fish. Good Luck, WTA
August 2, 2007 at 3:16 pm #596413I run 18lb too. Used to have 15 but wanted a little more strength for trollinig reservoir tree tops. I like the extra depth you get out of the 18 too. I’m always looking to let out less line. Having out over 150 feet of line with a big fish on makes me nervous. I like to keep things as short as possible.
August 2, 2007 at 10:22 pm #596560I use to troll 27 years ago and got frustrated with it and didn’t troll with leadcore for awhile. Have been using 18 lately and like it alot better. I also have some new 15 I noticed but just using the 18 right now and really like it.
Thanks, BillAugust 5, 2007 at 2:08 pm #597123Thanks guys! The two reels are just for eyes so that answers my question
August 5, 2007 at 4:33 pm #597146How much of a leader do you attach to the leadcore most of the time? What is the best rod and reel to use for this set-up? What type of line do you use for a leader? I am interested in trying this for trolling, but have never done it before.
