I’m wondering if anyone has tried this for weed walleyes. I saw a Bass show on how they where drop shotting in the weeds. So I was thinking this would work for weed walleyes on alot of lakes.

Explain a little about what “Drop Shotting” is??? I am on a lake with alot of eyes’ but yet alot of weedlines so this may be of a value to me as they become more difficult to catch after June…RR

Instead of having your hook & bait at the end of your line, you would have a weight at the end & your hook say 18″ up on the line. I’m thinking as the eye’s lay in the weeds it would see your leech or crawler there just above the weeds waiting to be lunch.

I wondered about it jigging in the spring , with the jig being the weight and a plastic above it. I was going to try it this spring but back surgery put a hold on that

Did it this weekend and it worked. The walleyes were thick on the edge of a weedline and in the small pockets near there. There was no wind, so we sat on top of them and picked off one after another. The rig I was using was a 3 way with a 1 foot dropper and a foot of line to my hook. The fish were pounding the bait, so giving them line was not an issue. Erratic jigging and dangling a leech under a bobber worked well also. We ended up catching over 30 walleyes off these two spots, but they were all 12-14 inches. Not very much help in a tournament, but still fun to catch. Now I need to get a boat that will allow me to sit right on top of them even in windy conditions.

I used this technique on Big Sandy last week. “eyes hold in the weeds there. I like a red size 4 red long shank hook about 14” up,(using 8# favorite fluorocarbaon line.)At the end of the line, I just tie an overhand knot. I use removeable split shot for weight, varying the size to depth and weed type, wind, etc. This way if you hangup, the weight will usually slide off over the knot, leaving your rig. Just reload a new shot on the line.

The funny thing is that walleye anglers on the river having been using the drop shot for decades.

The image I’ve included is called a Miller Rig. It is most often used in the spring around the spawn and into early summer. On the river two baits per line can be used and it is common for anglers to add one plastic and one hair jig… or a number of other lures.

I’ve got a couple friends that are deadly with this presentation. Craig Kronbeck comes to mind as an angler that uses this method with a great deal of success.

What is old is new again. Drop-shotting by any other name is still a time tested method for smacking the heck out of the walleyes.

If anyone wants a little tutorial on how to tie up a miller rig… stop on down to Everts. Dean has a little sample rig behind the counter to get a guy started.
