I usually use Vanish Leader Material for tying my own spinners. I’m almost out and need some tomorrow. Only problem is nobody around here carries the stuff for leader material. What do you guys do for a little stiffer florocarbon for leaders? I’ve heard Seagar, and P-Line in the 14 lb range is a little stiffer. Is this true?

I use Vanish for my lindy rig leader, but it does’nt stand up well enough for me when used in a crawler harness. I have found Berkley XT in the 10lb works great and lasts while catching a fair amount of fish before you need to replace it!!! I just had to many break offs with the Vanish in a crawler harness rig

    just my 2 cents…

    Seagar!!!!
    That stuff is great!

I won’t use Vanish…..had it break way too many times. Even the knot breaking at a simple, light pull. Too weak of a line.

That Seagar stuff is tough line and has never failed me!!!!!

Believe it or not BPS* XPS floro smoked everyone in the recent Flourocarbon Shootout. The serious guys in my neck o the woods (Bays de Noc) are all LOVIN it!
I have been using the 6# and 8# and really like all aspects of it. It has replaced P-line on my rigs.

Wish I could say the same for BPS Fluoro. I saw the recent comparison of fluoros and ordered some 8# from BPS. I was buying it to tie onto HiVis Power pro for drop shotting and vertical jigging. Well, I nearly went blind tying every knot I knew to create a strong connection between the two lines. Every time I tested to breaking point, the BPS line broke at the knot – I never got above 5# of tension. I am telling you that I tied literally hundreds of knots trying to get a strong connection (what can I say, it was a LONG winter). When I was close to chucking the whole thing, I tried some of the knots with good old XL 8#. What do you know, broke at 8.2# with the first J-Knot I tied and 7.8# with uni-uni. I then tied a palomar knot with the BPS 8# directly to the digital scale – broke at < 7#. Needless to say, I have not had the confidence to put it on any of my reels. I’ll be sticking with PowerPro, XL, and P-line for now.

Just my experience. Maybe just a bad spool – who knows.

When you tie flouro to braid be sure you do extra wraps on the braid or it will “cut” the flouro.

Using a double surgeons knot with 3 wraps on the 8#PP and 2 wraps on the 6# BPS flouro the flouro went at least 8-9# and twice over 10# before breaking.

Give the double surgeon a try

Thanks for the relpy and tip Tom. I will definitely try the Double Surgeons knot. Is fluoro much more prone to being cut by the braided lines than mono?

Again, thanks for the info – that’s what I love about this site.

Tom-Have you used a blood knot at all…that’s what I usually tie and haven’t expierenced any problems.
