While we are on the subject I am curious to hear the types of anchors that IDA ers have the best luck with. I like the spring release two finned “Digger” myself-holds great in sand while not weighing a ton. Anchors have come a long ways since the old concrete coffee cans

I have the biggest waterspike, with 4 ft of rubber-coated chain followed by 150′ of 3/8″ anchor rope. A little bulky in the boat but I have NEVER budged in current or in wind.
May 15, 2007 at 12:12 pm #571246For my Lund Angler SS…a 17 foot boat, I switch off betwee these two anchors.
The yellow one (I painted it with the yellow rubberizing paint from Menards) is a heavier anchor for the faster water of spring. The white one came with the white rubber coating, is a bit lighter for when the water slows down some.
Why strain your back when you don’t have too?
May 15, 2007 at 12:14 pm #571251Jason? Did you get the one at Everts?
Those are lighter than mine, but larger. If I ever leave one of mine in the river, that’s the style I’ll be getting.

Brian, did you have a stock photo of your anchors or did you run out to the driveway and take one a few moments ago?
Perhaps time for a little decaf, no?
May 15, 2007 at 12:24 pm #571255What Jason said I used to have a heavy mushroom anchor that would drag across the bottom all the time. It was very frustrating. Then I bought the biggest Waterspike and it’s like slamming on the brakes. It holds very well in current and wind.

I ‘spose that looks a little funny huh?
Someone asked for a picture of them last year…it’s an old photo.

There are quite a few guys who use the richter anchor as well. Easier storage seems to be one advantage.

After leaving two $80 Richters stuck to Pool 4 the same trip I would using nothing but a large W-Spike…I lost two BrianK anchors also in P-4…
Dean has great deals on WaterSpikes!
May 15, 2007 at 12:50 pm #571275I full disclosure, I’ve lost one of the white ones too…but the currant caught me and it was either let go of the rope or go in after it.
May 15, 2007 at 1:20 pm #571294I switch off between the following…
1. a lightweight/inexpensive sand spike purchased from Bass-Pro for under $20
2. a richter anchor purchased from Everts. This style is considerably more costly but it REALLY holds well during those conditions when the sand-spike style does not.
Both have their proper place in your boat depending on bottom content and how swift the current is moving.
I agree with BrianK…why strain your back (and wallet) if you do not have to.

The large water spike for this guy. The best anchor I’ve used and I’ve tried just about all of them.
May 15, 2007 at 2:13 pm #571316Water spike here also, wife had a minor fit when I told her the rope and chain were just as much as the anchor, but if you have one in you boat, this is the one.
