My 11 year old son wants to catch a walley this weekend. He has cought every but a walley. I mostly fish pike and musky so I need some help. I’m thinking about tonka but do not know were to go. I do not need to know your spots but just some good info to get started. We will not be out there until 6:00 am or so. Is there any other lakes I should look at in the west metro. Thanks for any help.

Pool 2 is always a good bet for walleyes. Trolling crank baits around hidden falls should produce something. There are some big sand flats down near 494 in south st paul that should hold fish. If your not familiar with pitching wingdams you can always just anchor up and fish live bait around them.

    Good luck this weekend.

I second Pool 2, there is not better sure fire way than trolling firetiger shad raps in 7′ of water from 4-8pm.

If you want to stay closer to Tonka, Waconia or Tonka arent bad places to start. Waconia has many reefs (Cemetary/Kegs) that top out in 5-10′ of water that should work well. There is a size min on Waconia for harvest. Brackens(sp?) Point or around Big Island arent bad places to start on Minnetonka.

If you want to lake fish and dont mind a drive, Collinwood Lake has some great numbers and can be real good early in the year.

If you are going to tonka, work the weed edges around 10-16ft,wayzata and browns bay are good places to start, also the reefs around big island(north side). Jig and minnow or lindy rigs leeches will work. You will get plenty of other fish to. Hope this helps.

I want to stay on a lake. I’m not familiar with the river and all its wing damms and stuff. I’m very near to waconia and tonka. Where is collinwood lake?

Upper Pool 2 has no wingdams and good numbers.

Collinwood is in Dassel/Cokato, about 45 miles west of Tonka.

Medicine might be a good choice. Its a much better walleye lake than it was. And it might not be as much of a zoo as Minnetonka. Eagle in Maple Grove is another possibility. Good Luck men!

We went out to indy and he bet up on me big time again. My son 5 small bass, one 8″ walley, and some small perch. Me one small bass and one perch. Well he got is first walley and got more fish them me as normal. All in all a good day on the water with him. Mom was not happy that we did not bring super home. We told her that we will have to do more fishing to get better at catching them.
