I’m just wondering what method you guys will be using for the opener for walleyes. In terms of bait, tackle, depth, trolling, structure or whatever. I need some new ideas…..mine haven’t worked out so well in the past. Opener has always been a tough one for us.

The first thing to do is tie on a good buzz , then slip bobbers on shallow rocks for me. Good luck
roosterrousterInactiveThe "IGH"...Posts: 2092May 9, 2007 at 5:41 pm #569627I always find myself on a rockpile edge, around 14-17 fow, anchored, slip bobbering 1 foot off the bottom, with a chartreuse jig with a leech… Good luck !!!

What lake ya’ fishin’? RR
I’ll be fishing the whitefish chain in Crosslake, MN. Maybe trying some of the smaller lakes in the area also if we don’t have much luck on the chain.May 9, 2007 at 6:11 pm #569649On a NW chain of lakes this early I would look for any current and live bait rig.

Have you ever fished Ossawinnamakee for walleye?

No I’ve never fished that lake before. I’ve heard of the lake but never fished it. I’m pretty new to the area.

Personakky I’ve be live bait rigging, or pulling cranks shallower, find active fish, but I’ve never put together a good day up there.
I’ll send you a pm, on some info I got from last year’s opener.
May 9, 2007 at 6:56 pm #569676Right, depends on the lake. On my favorite fishing hole i will be in 12-18 FOW using a 5′-7′ lindy, orange bead, red hook, and a minnow.
May 9, 2007 at 7:14 pm #569686I’ll be drifting Lake Michigans deep water flats adjacent to river mouths with live bait rigs, or pulling rigs or smaller stick baits in the evening on the river mouths.
May 9, 2007 at 7:36 pm #569695I’ll be using dynamite. If the fish are deep then I’ll tie a rock to the stick of dynamite before tossing it over board. You’d be surprised how quickly you can get a limit of walleyes using dynamite. It does help to have a strong throwing arm to get the stick as far from the boat as possible or else you might get a little wet. I’ve had it all with the hook-line-pole method of fishing. It takes too-much of my valuable time. Dynamite is a quick and easy way to load my freezer full of walleye fillets.
Actually where I fish has been open since March 16th and the wingdam bite right now is fantastic. Lots of post-spawn hungry walleye hitting jigs, live bait and cranks. If you fish the Mississippi right now is the time to take a kid fishing as the walleyes are easy to find and catch. Give a kid a lifelong memory and take them fishing when the fish are really biting.

May 9, 2007 at 7:43 pm #569696I will be pulling a nice fat leech on a lindy rig with a 6-8 foot snell through the sand. Has not failed me yet!
jhalfenPosts: 4179May 9, 2007 at 7:44 pm #569698At 12:00:01 am (GPS) I’ll be starting my first trolling pass, pulling husky jerks and rogues over an expansive shallow flat with scattered week clumps. Last opener, it took us about 7 minutes to get the first fish in the boat, hoping to beat it this year.
Nothing like scrambled eggs, walleyes and fresh salsa for breakfast on Saturday morning!
May 9, 2007 at 9:52 pm #569751We’ll be fishing with jigs and leeches where the river dumps into the lake. I just got done painting the stripes on the leeches. White Iron lake.
