Small Boat Trolling Options

So I am looking for some people who have been in the same situation as myself. I have downgraded from a big tournament style boat with a 4 stroke kicker and all the goodies to an older 16 foot tiller with a 95 2 stroke 50 horse. Since I love crankbait fishing I have a couple of ways to slow this boat down if the situation calls for it (will troll about 2.5 mph with no help). I have experimented with dropping the trolling motor and using that extra drag (gets me to about 2 mph), I have drug a 5 gallon bucket but I do not like the extra hassel unless I need to go slower. When I had a larger boat I used to tie a small drift sock so it would lie under the keel of the boat by running a rope from across the bottom of the boat with a drift sock tied in the middle from anchor cleat to anchor cleat. However with this smaller boat it kills the speed.

My questions are – has anyone put a small kicker on a boat of this size and is it worth it? I feel a little kicker would take up a lot of space and be somewhat hard get to but maybe worth interest. Second, has anyone ever experimented or know of an option for having more of a “Trolling” prop built, I know there are companies that build props for specific boats and applications but I have never heard of such a thing as this. Any other ideas that I have not thought of to give me more control than dropping the trolling motor or dragging something behind. The motor runs flawlessly so I do not need a kicker than for any other reason than to slow me down.

Being a 1995 outboard does it have carbs? If so just bring a small screwdriver along next time trolling, take the hood off and adjust the idle screw.

To locate idle adjustment just have someone exercise the throttle and it will be obvious.

Have you tried running the trolling motor towards the main motor. Sure give infinite speed adjustments. Mine will bring the 2mph down to near 1mph pretty easy.

I have a 70# trolling motor on my 16′ boat. I can get it up to 3.5mph with just the TM…

I also have two drift socks of different sizes that i’ll run when using the main motor.

There’s always back trolling and trolling plates too.

I was able to bring my 93′ 60hp Yammi 2 stroke down this way. There should be a stop screw somewhere that only allows the throttle to be twisted (slow speed) so far. That is where I made the adjustment.

Not all motors run smooth enough to idle super slow, that is the deciding factor with this method.

Since the motor runs very well I think I will try the idle screw option. Thank you for the idea as I had not thought of attempting this.
