Hi all. I’m new to this area, I grew up fishing in Northern Minnesota most of my life, but now live in Farmington. I am looking for good walleye fishing within 30-45 mintues from Farmington. I know the best answer is Lake Pepin, but don’t feel comfortable on the river at this point, but may try it out at some point. I have tried Lake Mazaska and French near Faribault last fall and on opener. Are there any other lakes around that people would recommend?

Unfortunately the only consistent walleye producing waters are The St Croix and the Mississippi you can access at Hastings or Prescott only 20 minutes from Farmington. Lakes like Marion have walleye but are very hard to pattern and catch with any regularity plus become quite the zoo when water warms with jet skis and pleasure boats a better bet would be Prior Lake but it gives up its walleyes in frequently and is also a heavily used recreational lake. I have caught some in Cannon Lake by Faribault but once again no regularity and have given up. Perhaps exploring the Cannon River between Northfield and Cannon Falls? YOur best bet for consistent action is to become a river rat or fish bass , Panfish, Northerns of which there are no shortage of lakes to try.

Hi and welcome. I was in your shoes about 3 years ago and I am still learning.

I have fished Mazaska and some of the Faribault lakes with no luck for walleyes. Like the other poster said, northerns, bass, white bass, crappies all do well in southern Minnesota lakes near Farmington. However, I was not real impressed with the walleye fishery.

The St. Croix and the Mississippi river are tremendous walleye fisheries but they take time to learn (I’m still learning). If you really want to catch walleye, I suggest you start there. Hiring a guide would be a really good idea. Also, surfing IDO will provide you with more information on those rivers than you will have time for. I am surprised with how much I have learned just by reading posts on this site.

    Good luck.

The st croix from Prescott up to stillwater is really like a lake.

There is current but not strong and nothin to hit out there. Very diff than the mighty muddy.

I too live in Farmington and there is several lakes in our area that u can catch walleys this time of year once it warms up good luck. Try looking at mn lake finder select lake and see net reports. Sorry not gonna run a list of names on here of meteo lakes lol. They are all hard to be consistant with any kind of bite couple here n there good bass, northern and crappie. Right now the miss and mn are high and probably not good for learning. Once it calms down pm me will get out there .

I think there’s good information on here for you cp44. Forget the local lakes, and head to a river. Either that or head north or target bass, panfish, or pike instead.

To be honest there are no good walleye lakes near Farmington. I just might not be doing it right so feel free to P.M. me if you would like to help me out. There are some ok lakes but you are better off going to the river. Red wing is not far away.

Any faribault lakes, fish weed edges early in the morning.

Cannon lake is probably the better of all the walleye lakes around faribault
