I got a new rod and reel, 7’MLF. I plan on using it for rigging and lighter jigs. Because of the fast action I’d like to spool it up with braid. I’ve never used braid for rigging(obviously will have a mono or flouro leader)
Make sense or should I go straight mono?
    It’s a C14 Stardic, spare spool would’ve helped with this .

If you have never used braid for rigging, you are missing out! You can feel the transition between rock/sand, metal objects, shell beds, and just about everything. A good rod helps as well, looks like you got that covered!

For the past few years I have been using power pro 10#, right now I am experimenting with 832 6#. So far I love the 832 and it seems to be just as strong, if not stronger, than the PP. Time will tell!

For lindy rigging I put the walker and bead right on the braid, and then use a small barrel swivel and a 6# leader. Fluoro if its really clear, otherwise mono.

One warning, if you are dragging shell beds or dumped rock you will go through rigs like they are going out of style. Sharp rock (not natural river rock) and shells will eat that braid. But I don’t lindy over those types of bottoms anyways, I do 3-way with an 8-10″ dropper.

I know alot of guys here on IDO like power pro and Suffix 832 and they are good proven lines that work well.

However, Berkley recently came out with nanofil which is a uni filament line; casts mile and doesn’t ice up nearly as bad as other braids.

I tried fireline for rigging and didn’t like it. Didn’t come off spool smoothly or go through guides. Maybe PP and suffix don’t have that problem, but stealth is key so whatever sensitivity you gain the fish does too.

Couldnt if worded that better in why I dont care to rig with it but pitching, blades, and power corking i will.

I just replaced the 4 pound nanofil on one of my rods used exclusively for casting panfish jigs without a float with 6 pound 832 green. I have some 3 pound fluorocarbon that will go on as a leader.

I’ll agree with Kevin on the feeling every little ding and twitch with the braids and in the panfish world some of those can be darned light.

Not all braids are created equal so I think it takes time and some $$$ to find which one will work on your behalf in specific situations. By all means find out for yourself. Like all things today, lines can change in a heartbeat so if you find one you really like, buy enough to last a while.

Belletaine I recall you upgrading your electronics recently, no? A lot of guys read these forums who don’t have nice sonars, including myself up to a few years ago. And my rod was my structure scan. Cheap POS depth finder would give me a depth and temp. and that was about it for reliablitly, so my lure was telling me everything I wanted to know about a location. If this is the case, I use to, and would recommend the braid for that, BC its better to be on and know you are on a good spot with a less than ideal presentation, than vice versa.

FWIW, I’ve gone back and forth between PP and Mono. I only ever fish Walleyes on Pool 2 which can be a snaggy nightmare depending on the wing dam. I don’t know that I catch any more fish with one line type or the other, however I do get a lot more jigs back out of the rocks with mono. If I get stuck with braided line the jig is usually gone, with Mono I can pop it out and gt it back much more often.

For me it was an upgrade Nick. I bought a used PRO V that had a Lowrance LMS 332 and I added a HB 597 to the bow. Still the low end of the “new age” stuff but my previous was a monotone graph without gps. My next item on the wish list is a 899 at the console.

Scott, I have the 597 too, amazing the difference in upgrades. Could define my boat fishing in two , the dark ages with no chip and sonar, and the enlightened with them.

Braid on Mille lacs sucks with all the Zebs. But other places great. I like 832 6lb. Slides of spool great.

I just picked up an Avid 7’0″ MLF yesterday at the Sports Show. I also picked up a couple spools of 10/4 Sufix 832 in Hi Vis Yellow. The main techniques I plan on using with this setup is going to be for rigging and flinging small crankbaits for walleyes. I’ve always been a mono guy for my rigging and jigging, but figured I would give the superline a try this year and see how I like the added sensitivity for pulling around lindys and spinners.
