snakey little ringworm

I did up some ringworms in special order colors for a friend who wanted them for this spring’s walleye fishing. This blue/purple combination kind of stuck with me so I made a few extra and added eyes to them. Man they look like snakes….or young eels.

I had that mold (well, one like it!) customized for me a few years ago. That one is 4″ standard. I had them keep the same tail, the same head, but shorten the body to 3″ overall length and slim the body down a little bit. That thing was a walleye killer! Sold it when I got out of plastics pouring, not sure who has it now!

This color was by far the hottest color I’ve ever used for summer walleye. Purple with blue flake and a bold pearl tail. I dipped the tail in chartreuse spike-it sometimes too, to do purple/chart. Might want to give it a shot Tom! I believe I used LC purple and bears blue flake.

I do a few in the pearl tail purple body Kevin. That’s one of the mainstay colors for me and walleye fishing.

Glad to hear it! Most people ignore the “old school” colors and go strictly for these new core colors and hi-tech laminating this and that… and forget all about the old purple/chartreuse and purple/pearl. Now if we could just get bfishn to make a purple/pearl moxi…….

Here ya go Kevin. These were done today for another person. That pearl looks good hanging off the back of the blue-purple.

The pearl has a just a dab of uv enhancer in it and in the sun it really brightens it.

Why did you quit shooting Kev?

    A couple reasons.
    1. I made enough friends that make about everything under the sun, I can get about anything poured for a good price.
    2. Just no time! With fishing, working, and making some jigs I just did not have the time to fire up the plastics pot and shoot.
    3. I wasn’t that good at it!

Making my own plastics really intrigues me. I have no desire to pour jigs, I buy plain and paint. But this plastics thing…spendy to get into?

Yes. Back when I poured I got that question a lot. I always told them the start up for making 1 bait would be about $300. After that its all mold/plastic costs, as the glitters and colorants will last an average fisherman for years and years. I’m not sure on the prices as of right now, might be a little higher actually.

You’ll need several colorants, glitters, pearl powder, worm oil, plastic, scents (if you want them), a couple pyrex measuring cups, and old microwave, an injector, and a mold.

When I poured there were not many hand pour molds for walleye baits, a couple grubs/minnows but they looked like junk and did not perform well. Injection is the way to go.

Here’s a nice clearer water bait. That clear bluegill color is loaded with uv enhancer. Look at the clear tails…it shows up well there. I have two different baits in the picture using the same colors but I used the smoky brown as the injection [tail] color in a couple then switched the bluegill as the injection color. I like both.

I did these up for a friend last night. He’s been sticking some decent Red Wing walleyes and sauger using the oystershell worm at the bottom of the picture. The bright colors are his liking when the water takes on more color and that has already started.

Here’s another twist to these worms – a two color core shot.

Those look great Tom! I followed up on the info you gave me and there definitely is a financial commitment isn’t there!? Haha Still want to pursue it however. The molds seem quite a bit more expensive than jig molds, is that do to detail? Sorry to hijack, kinda got carried away!

This color is called atomic chicken. You can see the butterscotch color on one side and the orange on the other in the top bait of the pile.

Nice color for dirty water. And the butterscotch color has uv enhancement for deep water visibility.
