Hard work and persistence has paid off, as congratulations go out to John Grubenhoff of Pasco Washington! John is no new comer to the Columbia River where his recent behemoth was caught. Reaching back to he and his son’s Governor Cup Win in 2002, this man has racked up some seriously impressive catches. I’m sure the entire story of how, when and where will be in about every outdoor magazine shorty, so for now I’ll just add one more thought – there’s a bigger one out there somewhere – let’s find her! P.S. TO James Holst – Ready for the Big River yet?

Awesome fish. The columbia kicks out some serious toads. One of these days when I’m in Oregon, I’m going to skip chasing steelhead and salmon and go fish some walleye.

    John,

The very first thing I found out about the walleye population on the Columbia, is “most” of the locals hate them! They get a little angry our coveted firm white fleshed fish would attack and consume their helpless young salmon and trout! With only the slight pressure the Columbia gets regarding Mr Walleye, I’m surprised a fish this size wasn’t caught 20 years ago. I don’t want to mislead anyone, so don’t think this is the land of easy giants. I’ve occasionally fished the Columbia for over 20 years, and while a 10-15 plus might be reasonable expected, the big Greenbacks of Manitoba would be a better bet for a wall hanger. Besides…if you make the trip to the Columbia, why not try out our giant sturgeon, and if you come bring a few friends, so they can help lift it for a quick photo!

Exactly. 10# walleye would probably make great cutbait for 12′ sturgeon!!!

I’ve done the sturgeon. Great fun as well. I get out there every year as my best friend from high school lives in Beaverton and is a salmon and steelhead guide out there. One of these trips we will go chase some eyes though.

    35 5/8 x 22 3/4 – If I remember correctly – an absolute pig.
