Pitching blade baits is something I like to do a lot!! Each time out I try to fine tune my abilities in pitching these small treble hook holding pieces of colored metal. I still find it amazing how they do not get snagged and lost in all the rocks I throw them at, but that’s where all the fish are at !!!
I still remember the beginning days and getting tips from the likes of Dean Marshal, Dee Zee, Dustin Stewart and Eric Rehberg to name a few. On one of my trips to Pool 4 Dean gave me a few blades and a few first timer tips and off I went. While vertical jigging with all the correct tools, not ripping the bait like most of us thought to be the case back then, I would work the bait very similar to a jig and plastic… Whoda thought ??? lol I had my first ever blade bait walleye absolutely SMACK the bait and with the normal reflex of any fisherman… FISH ON !!!
One outing lead to another and I find myself pitching a lot of rock points ,wing dams and sand flats with the funny looking little bait with many names… The Blade Bait..
Now all I needed was one of the Ben’s on this trip to get a good photo for me…

My favorite bait shop here still does that. Just don’t remind Russ I have 2 of his lucky shirts still…. he was told a different story!

How much action you guys put on these things with cold water. Stuck from shore nowadays in snaggy areas thinking putting on a big float, whip it out to the structure 30yards, let the blade shoot down 15′ and kind of work it that way. Got to pick me up a wing-it bobber, just don’t know if it would be worked effectively that way.

I agree very much on the getting away from ripping them. Back in the 70’s, that was all I saw guys doing on the river. Glorified snagging lure. Years passed and I tried them for Trout/salmon at the power plants and harbors. First thing I learned was how many hits I got while the bait was sitting still. As time progresses, I continue to learn more and more applications for them. Talk about a TRUE CONFIDENCE BAIT Last I counted, my B.B. Index was over 400 painted blades
