Hey all new to the board! I am relatively new to fishing (got hooked last year on an awesome millacs trip and earlier this year up at vermillion) and have finally got a pretty nice little setup going gearwise outside of the boat =\. Seems to me I have had the most fun on prior so far but have had a hard time getting on some walleye (or some northern would be fun) off the shore! I have had a bunch of luck with some nice big pan fish and some nice bass. Any advice you could give to a humble tenderfoot trying to sharpen his skills would be greatly respected and appreciated!

First of all welcome to the site. For starters Prior lake is not the best of northern lakes. There is getting to be a few more each year but has a LONG way to go to become a good northern lake. As far as walleye go I,d say that Night fishing would be your best bet. With fall not far away the Walleye will start coming into the shallower water and feeding more to fatten up for the winter. A lighted bobber with a fat juicy leech or a minnow should do the trick. Or casting a shallow rapala. If you have never got into Ice fishing I would give it a try. Not to expensive to get stared and you can get to all of those spots you would need a boat for in the summer months. Prior is a excellent lake for great panfish and some nice walleye in the winter. Once agin welcome and good luck fishing.

Thank you fish thumper for the advice and the warm welcome! I do want to get into ice fishing a friend of mine has and auger and just bought a 4 season tent he was planning on using as a make shift warming house. As for now I will wait for the fall to approach and try and do some night fishing.

Jeff – How is it going? Didn’t take long to find me in here lol!

First I have never fished Prior, but I was just looking at my Navionics app I have on my phone of the lake and would recommend picking up this cheap app just to have. If there has been a good wind from a pretty steady direction for at least a day or two I would find some hard bottom shoreline on the downwind side and the bigger the lip on the shoreline the better and cast some raps to begin with right at dusk into the night. Being summer and all the forage there is out I would use small cranks to begin with. Replicate what they are eating and just read a post of walleyes coughing up 2″ perch on Mille lacs so start in that range. Then if that doesn’t produce a lighted bobber with a leech or minnow would be plan B. Any spot that will contain just a bit of current running by it will typically hold more walleyes than not. Such as a narrows between bay and main lake especially if the wind is blowing into or out of such areas. Good luck
