I am looking for a new jig pitching rod. I mostly use 3/16 oz. jigs casting to weedlines. I am looking at the legend elite or the legend xtreme. What model would be the best? Thanks for the help.

St croix are nice but pricey. I use elk river custom rods. Either a erx 6’6″ mlxf or a 6’10” mlxf. @$219.00 mine are paired up with a pfluger supreme xt.
I really love the St. Croix Legend. The sensitive of the rod is great and winding in the fish are a lot of fun. Good Luck!
I picked up a G Loomis NRX this winter and I’ve had a blast pitching with it this year.
I got a St. Croix Legend Tournament 6’10” ML Extra Fast this year for the purpose of tossing blades and lighter jigs. I absolutely love it! It is super sensitive and very comfortable to fish with. I paired it with a pflueger supreme and 10# power pro. I love this combo, it also doubles as an excellent rod for live bait rigging
I would say the extreme is the better pitching rod, especially since they went to micro guides on that model. As far as length, Id say 6’6 to 7′ is most popular in med or med/light being most common, and Id stay extra fast for sure! Handle a few sizes/powers of the extreme n see what ya like!
6’8″-6’10” MLXF. Honestly though I really enjoyed fishing with a XF the past few weeks.
What type of reel are you planning on putting on it too?
Shimano, Pflueger, they all balance a little different.
St. Croix legend tournament 6’6″ ML with fast action- I have had no issues with mine
Finding the right fishing rod for an avid fisherman is like finding a good wearing pair of boots that just last and last. The reasons we do or don’t like something is as numerous in variety as the number of models and makes there is to choose from.
With that being said, day in, day out, I’m reaching for a St. Croix. Would it be someone else’s top choice? Not always. But I’ve fished a few models of most rods available in the $100 to $400 price range, for nothing more than my own personal discovery. I have purchased, fished, and resold no less than 40 rods in this category so I know what I like and why I like it.
With that being said, time and time again, I reach for a St. Croix more often than not. I look to a St. Croix quicker than anything else when a new rod is desired. I’ve come to learn what St. Croix makes and there are very few surprises anymore.
There are many VERY nice options out there and I don’t mean to say that the other makes aren’t any good, I just want to point out that my opinion is biased and based upon my own research and what I’d recommend for you STILL doesn’t guarantee that it would be what you’d like best.
On the flip side, a Legend Elite is a Legend Elite and I know for certain I can tell when I don’t have a Legend Elite in my hands. Many people want to say that lower models and less expensive offerings are just as good but it’s usually based on a person’s comfort zone regarding price points. Notice, the other comparison’s that are hailed as “just as good” are STILL having to measure up to an existing benchmark. With that being said, do you want the product that set that benchmark or someone’s best effort at duplication? Believe me, if they were just as good, I’d have a boat full of them and St. Croix would go out of business.
You’ve obviously had some exposure to St. Croix to know what two models interest you the most. If you know WHY you want a Legend Elite or Legend Xtreme, don’t let anyone try and sway you. They’re the best to thousands of avid fishermen for a reason.
As for which model to choose, the other posters here have pretty much got that covered. Extra Fast action is king for the presentation you intend to use. The medium or medium light power/load can only be determined by you. I lean toward med/lt. It’s just the way I prefer based upon both the ability to handle big catches AND not wear me out! A rod too soft and rod too stiff can increase your rate of fatigue so I prefer the med/lt. based on the overall performance, balance, and personal effect. Any of the MLXF models should serve you greatly. But, if you prefer a little extra power/control in your “feel”, stay with an MXF.
Good luck and happy shopping!!!
