fine tuning slow death rig

Had a great night last night pulling slow death rigs on bottom bouncers on a Duluth reservoir. Caught 7 total walleye in about 3 hours of fishing. One thing I haven’t figured out yet, I caught all 7 while my buddy got skunked. The only differences in our presentation was I was using a M rod and he was using a MH rod. Is it possible that I just had a better feel on the lite bites and he was missing all the action because the rod was too stiff? Otherwise I don’t know, any ideas? Also, caught them all on the impulse nightcrawlers pinched in half; all 7 fish came on the same half plastic. Now that’s great value.

Were your leads the exact same length ? Bottom bouncers same weight ?

Was one of you holding his rod while the other one had it in the holder? One of you holding steady while the other person dropped back and then pulled forward???? I am a big fan of the slo death rig and there are many little variances that can trigger bites on any given day.

Rigging of the worm is ultra-important as-is swivel quality. A boat side comparison of each bait in the water would likely have told the tale. I’ve seen hooks that no matter how you rig the crawler, will not spin reliably.

Another component would be how often and which direction you turned the boat. Outside guy pulls higher and faster and vice versa for the inside.

Or it could be dumb luck! Wouldn’t be the first time, and as long as you’re on gge good end of it all is well. Congrats on the good fishing!

If you are driving the boat and catching all of the fish, it is because you are a better fisherman. If you are driving the boat and your passenger is outfishing you, you are still a better fisherman but you are working harder to keep your passenger on the fish instead of trying to catch fish youself.

I was driving the boat… thanks for the confidence boost! I’m going to check the snells later to see if they were the same length. After I caught the 4th fish, I had my buddy pull his up to make sure it was spinning and I thought it looked normal (maybe just my inexperience with the rig). Also, I was probably lift/dropping the bouncer more often and my buddy was dragging it more. We’re going to try again tonight so more tuning of the rig is in the game plan. Thanks for the comments.

If it starts to happen again, switch snells with your parnter….in fact, I have even switched rods. If you still are catching them, it is how you are holding your rod and how you are lifting it of bottom. I did this once and we discovered that it was the way I was continually lifting and making sure I was close to the bottom.

    Good luck.
