Ive been fishing a lake for the last couple weeks and got onto a spot where Ive been catching 10-20 walleyes (8-11″), a night, in the prime time last 2 hours or so and the same in the morning hours. The water is very clear, visiblity almost 18′. I have yet to pick up anything larger. sitting in roughly 21 FOW. It is not Lake of the Woods. Any suggestions.

    John:

An old guide friend told me once if you’re catching, but not what you want, move 10′ up or down… its worked for me before…

I am not a great walleye fisherman but when I’m ice fishing for them, the biggest 5 walleyes I’ve caught have come in 2-4 feet of water.

I agree 100%, especially after dark. We fish a clearwater lake with tip ups and the shallower holes will give out some giants well into the middle of the night.

So you would advise to go deeper or shallower?

I would try shallower water in the same area. Are you catching most of the fish you are marking? If not, maybe some of those fish are larger and you should increase the size of your presentation.

virtually every one that shows up is caught.

Try a larger presentation of lure &/or bait selection

Larger baits and a tad shallower should do the trick.

If you are catching almost every fish, then the presentation is probably not the problem. Try fishing deeper and put some tip ups in shallow or vice versa.

    X2

Tip ups when used correctly are a great way to cover more area and depths.

When I am fishing a combo of tipups and jigging, I always put the tipups shallower. They are easier to work with in shallow water and the jigging rod w/ reel is easier to work in the deeper water…
