Why cant you take the 63MXF? I packed my old 1 pc Avid 63MXLF and a 66MF into Quetico a few times. I packed them in a plastic rod tube that I lashed to the canoe thwarts on portages.

I have that same Fenwick rod and have taken it up north in the canoe and other trips. I’ve had it for two years and really like it.

My thoughts are that rod really excels at crankbaits since the tip isn’t truly a fast tip. I don’t think it’s quite a moderate action either but more of an in between. I like fast to xf tips if the question is purely for jigging.

Sometimes I have to share but my ideal canoe setup is a 6′ med St. Croix Premier for live bait, jigging, and plastics. I like the shorter rod when I have to land my own fish in a canoe. My second rod is a cheapy 6’6″ medium that I use for cranks. If that one gets broken than my wallet does not.

All that said that HMG rod will work really well as an all arounder in a canoe. Get yourself a case and bungee it in. I had to learn that lesson the hard way(more than once ) Now that I have a case, I haven’t busted a rod in years.

I too take two rods, one is 6’6″ two piece and then a smaller lighter weight two piece. With these two rods I have not found a fish I could not land. I ALWAYS travel with rods in cases (see above poster). Then when camp is set up, the rods get put together and we fish. This just makes traveling easier and I have never broken a rod this way. If just out for day trips fishing with short portages, then I keep my rods together. Which by the way is the only time I have lost a rod because we were out for the day and got caught in wind and flipped. I say, don’t over think it.
