Just A Dream – Fall Pepin Walleyes

Has anybody else read the walleye radio telemetry study done by the DNR on P4 back in 98 and 99? After reading this I just couldn’t avoid a trip to the lake in search of these fall walleyes. Study at http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/publications/fisheries/investigational_reports/482.pdf

So we fished the areas marked on maps contained in this study for fall from about 9:00am to 2:00pm last Saturday and absolutly nothing but some stripers and a perch. Then on to Point No Point per the study and only found some really nice crappies from 3:00pm to dark.

Is finding these walleyes on the lake looking for a need in a hay stack this time of year. I had a lot of faith in this study but we were one of maybe 6 boats on the lake while I know many more on the river section above.

    What are your thoughts? Thanks

That study is in our articles section of IDO.

I’ve dropped the MarCum camera down in areas that people weren’t catching fish many times. Just because we can’t catch them doesn’t mean they aren’t there…in many cases!

People catch Walleyes and Saugers on the lake all winter long through the ice. There are fish out there. I haven’t done it myself, so I can’t give any real info, but I do have friends who catch them during the winter. It stands to reason that the fish have to be there in the fall as well.

Jeff, this video isn’t of the lake but just below L&D #3 but it relates.

A number of years ago, the sauger bite was rolling good in the fall. Then, just like it started it stopped. I asked many Pool 4 experienced fishermen what happened. They all said the same thing. “With that many people fishing that small area, they are fished out”.

That concerned me and I checked with the DNR. Their reply was “the fishery is just as good as it was 20 years ago”.

The following year, the same thing happened. The stupid crazy sauger bite just stopped. Sure there were people catching a few fish, but not like it was.

This was the year I got my hands on the new (at the time) MarCum cameras with the Darkwater Technology. It allowed me to see into the depths.

So here’s one of the first videos I captured. Notice all the good size walleyes were in much shallower water then the saugers.
