I have never used red tail chubs for walleye fishing before. Does anyone use them in the fall? If so, what would be the preferred rigging/ fishing method? Where- river, lakes?
My favorite bait in the fall for river eyes and they work on the lakes too. I always just lindy rig them, hooking them through the mouth. You can catch a couple fish on them unless they really get chomped. Very hardy.
If you don’t mind paying $10/doz, then by all means get some! Nothing like feeling that minnow go crazy when a fish is close. The ones with the little horns on their heads are deadly!
In the Detroit Lakes area we also Jig them depending on what the fish want that day. They are the go to tourney and fall minnow up here. Two weeks ago we were out and caught about 35 fish in the morning between 4 of us. Had to switch to rainbow chubs because the bait stores are out of redtails up here and only caught one northern after that.
The work very well in the fall. A simple setup is a 1/2 oz Lindy weight, 3 foot leader, and a #2 hook. I like to stop briefly everytime I mark a fish, and let the redtail swim around infront of them.
