I was on Mille Lacs this last weekend and we caught a tagged fish. So I sent in the information and just got back the results today. It says it was originaly tagged in 2002 and was 16.7″. When we caught it this last weekend (10 years later) it only measured 20″. I don’t think this sounds right. What are your guys thoughts?

It was a male fish. But do they really grow that slow?

Males generally don’t get big, and it also could be just overall bad genetics…

Male eyes typically top out at about 24-26″ when conditions allow where as females will top 30″ when conditions are perfect.

I’ve caught numerous tagged fish on Mille Lacs. It’s not uncommon to get the data back from the DNR and the walleye has only grown an inch. As others have already stated, those are adult male walleyes that have already reached their maximum size. I had one walleye in particular that only grew 3/4 of an inch in 7 years.
