mlf vs mlxf

Many of you guys have a very keen understanding on rod power and action so I’m sure someone can help me. What is the difference in a say 6’6 mlf.vs.the same rod in mlxf. Is there a loss of semsivity or control in a mlf? Also what’s the difference in a 6’6 mlf vs a 6’9 -7′ mlxf using braid. Specificallyy for pitching jigs.

    Thanks.

Med-Lite XtraFast will have a quicker tip where a Med-Light Fast will load up further down the rod blank.

A good example of this can be noted while pitching blade baits. You see many people using ML XF rods when pitching blades, mainly because a standard Med-Light Fast action rod doesn’t have a quick enough tip get the blade vibrating without overworking the bait and ripping the blade up off the bottom. Using a Med Power X-Fast action rod would give you the control to lightly lift and vibrate the blade; however the medium power stiffer rod can make it difficult to buffer and control big headshakes while using hardline.

Pete gives as good an answer as possible…

But I can give you two exact comparisons of MLF (7 foot Legend Elite) and MLXF (6’9″ Legend Extreme)for pitching jigs.

I can toss jigs about the same distance with both rods and the sensitivity was about the same (although the Extreme is a bee-u-ti-ful rod to work!).

The biggies for me and why I went to 69MLXF is the amount of rod that flexes. I didn’t really like that the MLF rod had more bend along the whole blank. MLXF has less bend along the whole blank and is easier to work jigs and set the hook.

All this is just my own use with both rods and not really the “rod” language. Hope it helps you. I’m sure that there are others that love MLF too…best to try some out.

    Great responses Pete and Scott!

The LE66MLF was my fav rod for some years for pitching jigs 3/8oz and under. That being said, when the same action came out in a 69MLXF Extreme series 4 years ago, Dean let me “test drive” a proto type for a day on P-4 with a good plastic bite going in Nov.

Dean LOVES pitching smaller blades and the rod was absolutely awesome for that application…but it also did everything my LE66MLF could casting jigs…and more…Thinner, more sensitive tip section, faster action for easier hooksets, greater leverage for fighting big fish, and more length for longer casts…

Two weeks ago I was driving 1/2oz jigs with 5″ Paddletails into 10-12lb Lake Michigan Browns on that rod with no problem (7lb Braid).

There is NO disadvantage I can see in the 6’9″ to 7′ MLXF walleye models compared to a 66MLF. I’d LOVE to see a 69MLXF in a Legend Elite.

Tom, Those jigs I made also had 2x-4/0 gamakatsu hooks. Ultra sharp, but thicker diameter.
Here is an example between medium light and medium action rods that hasn’t been brought up. Ecspecially in short rods like a 6′-6″ or 7′. When you hook up on big fish that can make long runs, a medium light will wear out the fish a lot faster than a medium action. The fish fights more of the rod, than your arm. Tom watched this while I was making short order of 8# brownsd while he was down here. Plus you’ll bust more fish off on the stiffer rods

Thanksguys. Scott you really nailed the answer i was looking for. Appreciate it. I got a 69 mlxf thanks to Tom’s advice earlier and love it. Just want to make sure I’m not missing something
