Rigging and fishing moxies.

Hi guys. Been reading this forum for a while and finally thought I’d join in.

I read a lot about Moxies on here, but what I’m not clear about is how they’re rigged and fished. Do you put them on a jig head, use a bullet sinker on the front like a bass plastic Texas rig, just the Moxi on a hook? I’ve seen a lot of mentions of the plastic, but I’ve just never seen any specifics on how to rig them.

Then, once they’re rigged, how do you fish them? Drag them, bounce them, swim them? I know it could be all of the above, but what are some of the go-tos?

Really appreciate what folks are willing to share.

Welcome to IDO. IMO Moxies were developed to be primarily fished using jigs and for walleyes. You can use them all sorts of ways and for all sorts of species; but where Moxies shine is in low flow situations on rivers where the moxie tail will still thump when other plastics won’t.

As was mentioned above, rig on a jig. Cast, dragged or vertical jigging can all produce. Experiment until you find what works best for you depending on the time of year, species being fished for and body of water your fishing in.

Try some of these jigs with them.

    H2O Jigs from BfishN

They where designed to hold plastics on and with larger hook s to stick out of the side of the plastics. Draggin jigs work well to.

I took a chance on Moxies this year. The few times I tried them I had no luck on Walleyes, but caught several SMB on them. I would put them on a jig. Cast out and a slow retrieve worked well.

Started pitching these little Moxi gems on H2o jigs when they first were available last fall. Having the right sized jig head that is light enough to sweep with the current but heavy enough to make bottom contact and in the fish zone was the key for me when fishing the wingdams and current seams on old Miss. I have been using the new G-Loomis NRX 802S JWR which is a 6’8″ med X-fast rod with incredible sensitivity and light weight. teamed it up with a Shimano Ci4 and some 10/2 Hi-vis Power Pro and a 3′ fluorocarbon leader. This is my go to set up late fall on the river.
A snowstorm last November on the Miss turned out to be golden.

Appreciate the replies and welcomes from everybody who posted.

Follow on question: Is there any tackle shop in the St. Paul area that actually stocks a good selection of Moxies? I know there’s mail order, but I kind of like buying in person when I can, it’s easier to get a look at the sizes and the colors.

I asked at the Gander in Woodbury and got a blank stare. I looked around, but didn’t see them or anything similar.

    Thanks again.

I find mail order is better. You can always seem to find the color you want online. When you go to a baitshop most of the good colors are sold out. Walleyes hate these things and try to kill them.

Joes Sporting Goods off of Rice St and Hwy 36 has a good selection of moxies, paddle tails and ringworms.

Joes Sporting Goods has the best inventory I know of but you still wont find as many as what is on line. Fishing with Jake a few weeks back he even mentioned Joes might be getting low on inventory. Get you order in today or tomorrow and there is a good chance you will be fishing with them by the weekend.

Ordering direct from BfishN is about as easy as it gets and freaky fast to. 4 days tops I would say to your door. Many times its just a day or 2.

Update. Stopped by Joe’s yesterday. They have a full selection, they looked really well stocked in all the colors.

I did have to ask for them, though. They’re not in the asile with the plastics or the powerbaits, they are on a rack up close to the checkouts. I asked two employees who were standing together and one jumped in first and said he’d never heard of them. Luckily the other guy knew what they were.

Looking forward to a test drive.

Good luck with the Moxies. Last year we had some pretty good luck fishing them real slow. Almost to the point of dead sticking them and letting the tail do it work. With any luck I may get to give them a try out on pool 2 tomorrow .

Did you happen to run into Roger at Joes today? Older guy with a great smile and loves to talk fishing. I need to get back in there and say hi to him again.

I’m doing a little experimenting this Fall. I have a good friend that fishes LOTW a lot in the Summer. He hates live bait and loves to fish walleyes with Trigger X or other plastics. This summer he put a couple of bags of ringworms and moxies in his Trigger X and GULP Alive “juice”. He said that most of the time, he couldn’t even get a lure to the bottom on some of the best rock piles before Mr. Walter would smack it.
So I’ve got a mess of BFN plastics soaking right now! Can’t wait to give it a try.
