Does anyone sell Willow cat scoops? If not, I’m really surprised that no one markets them. Would anyone have a picture or discription of one looks like so I could make my own.

We have them here in Alma [but no cats to go with]. basicly its a scoop with a hollow handle for the cat to slide down then it opens up on the end to hook the bait. Not much to it but they work pretty good. No stings or swollen fingers.

I think he means the “Rake” for scooping his own cats.

I was aware of the minnow bucket scoops you spoke of,thank you. What I was looking for was info on what scoops or nets for harvesting willow cats for bait look like.
If someone even wants to Pm me with pic’s or a good discription it would be greatly appreciated.

The bigger question is how do you take willow cats out of a designated trout stream?

You can’t. Not without running the risk of getting into a lot of trouble.

    Tell me about it.
The old “drainage ditch” that runs through my duck/pheasant grounds, where I “USED” to be able to collect my rainbow chubs is now a designated trout stream and “appears” to have willow cats….or, they are little bullheads???

There hasn’t been a trout in that water in 30 years, all because of a one-time fluke flood!!!!!!!!!

There are willow cats and then there are stone cats I believe you might be seing stone cats imo. They are in alot of streems where the actual willows(mad toms) are in select ones. If you wanted to know they dont have a long life expectancy they normally live a little over 2 years. You need to read the regs before you go to certian areas to try and catch them. Good luck…

I know a fella (and so do you) that read up on the laws about collecting bait with a net in creeks.

His new creek was good to go, but was stopped by a CO while netting. Nothing to worry about he thought.

Then after the CO was in his car for way too long of a time, he informed our friend that he was using a net too early in the year. That wasn’t list in the reg summary.

I believe he was let go with just a verbal warning. The CO wasn’t even aware of this law!

Gary I appreciate the heads up on designated trout streams regs. I fish pools 13-14 and to my knowlege this issue wouldn’t affect me.
I just wanted to see what a willow cat rake or scoop for harvesting willow cats might look like. I just didn’t want to mess with a string of pop cans for bait collection.

I have made many scoops for dipping cats. I use all aluminum for the handle and the hoop then mesh netting for the bag. Its more work than you could imagine when dipping cats but for some reason it’s fun to.

Thank you Tim for the info, it was greatly appreciated. Since we can’t buy them here in Illinois or Iowa I’m going to figure someway to catch my own.
