I’m thinking about picking up a new rod to cast light crankbaits with. I’m considering something in the 6′-6″ to 7′-0″ range. I was thinking a 6′-9″ ML might work then I could also use it as a pitchn’ rod also.

What does everyone prefer to use when casting lighter cranks like #5 and #7 shad raps?

Of course I will need to put a reel on it also??

I think that Croix is perfect for that.

I venture to Joe’s every year to hear Chris Gilman talk about walleye fishing tips and his FLW experiences. Two years ago he came in with a couple Loomis rods to talk about techniques and such. Last year he had the Extreme 6′ 9″ MLXF with him and talked about how it was a recent purchase that he loved for tossing cranks.

6’9 MLF Elite Tech with an arbor reel has been one of my favorite crank combos. The rod quality doesnt have to be nothing spendy, anything 6’6-7’6 with ML or M action works well. I would spend the money on a good reel and load that up with 6-14lb superline depending on where you’re fishing.

casting #5 shad raps accounts for a high percentage of my summer fishing and i like the 6’6 extreme medium fast…

Quantum 7′ med fast tip Superlite HSX 72 with a Quantum Catalyst #20 and 10# braid. That’s my universal rod for most applications. I use that for everything from dragging ringworms on 1/16 jigs to medium husky jerks.

    Depends on your budget…

If you are considering St Croix dont overlook the Eyecon Series ECS70 MLF ($120) w/ a 4730 Arbor and 8# braid for both techniques. Or at ($180) an Avid series AVS69MLXF if you prefer to use Mono line.

i don’t have a really fancy setup, but it works well. It’s a 7 1/2 foot Cabelas Tourney Trail ML. Nice long parabolic action, but surprising power in reserve. It really launches those light Shad Raps and plays fish wonderfully.
