Yeah this. I’ve bought beer a few times on Sunday since, imagine that will increase this fall.
Our family will likely go straight from mass to the liquor store and then home to fire up the grill. So the blue-law lovers can have fun with that one!
August 30, 2017 at 8:08 pm #1712904long weekend test coming up… stay tuned, might make my first sunday purchase…. EVER !!!! (not counting 3.2 sales on sundays back when I just turned 21 and was a raging )
August 31, 2017 at 5:32 am #1712929Yep, they’ll be busy this Sunday. Long weekends are about the only time I buy on Sunday.
July 21, 2019 at 9:38 am #1868639Was curious about the impact of this change 2 years later. Found this online but it’s not very current. Seems sales are slow. Personally I can think of only 2 times I’ve purchased liquor on a sunday but I typically only go to the liquor store once maybe twice a month.

July 21, 2019 at 10:11 am #1868640I think I’ve only visited the liq one time on a Sunday to buy some beer. Now back when I was young I’d run to st croix every Sunday, market place liquor store.
Besides that I always see cars at the north branch towers liquor on sundays. I cant imagine profits are to much more the. Say a Monday or Tuesday.July 21, 2019 at 12:07 pm #1868648Maybe just maybe, the increase of craft breweries and craft distilleries has had an impact. Maybe the increased social pressure of extreme dieting has had some effect.
Or maybe people just aren’t drinking more just because they’re open on Sundays.
Any fool who believed that increased liquor sales would be the result is well, a fool.

Yep. Reminds me of the argument of keeping fish pre spawn effects the fishery more than if you take them post spawn. The math don’t add up.
Sunday liqour is a convenience thing.
July 21, 2019 at 5:12 pm #1868684I do most of my shopping on the weekends anyway, so for me it’s quite handy that they’re open on Sundays. Now if I could just remember to hit up Hobby Lobby on Saturdays that would be great (they are closed on Sundays).

What you guys talking about???sales went up. Even if only modest, an increase is increase. I thinks it’s pretty common knowledge, the more opportunity to sell something…the more likely TOO sell something.
I love the change. You’d be a fool not too.

And why is it I only get a craving for Chick Fil A on Sundays?

Sales went up about 1/2 as much as the previous year, without Sunday sales. So you can’t even assume that Sunday sales even had an impact at all.
July 21, 2019 at 7:07 pm #1868699^^ Yep, been there! At my old office location there was this amazing Chinese restaurant nearby. They weren’t open on Mondays. Wouldn’t you know it… we would always crave them on Mondays, then have to wait until Tuesday!
July 21, 2019 at 7:11 pm #1868700Adding a day of sales (any day) will increase sales. Might not increase the bottom line but it will increase sales. That is of course unless you have zero people walk thru the door and buy something.
Unless you own a off sale it really doesn’t matter. Everybody wanted Sunday liquor but the fact is it only effected a handful of people.

Increased sales doesnt necessarily equal increased profits.
riverrunsInactivePosts: 2218July 21, 2019 at 9:05 pm #1868715The folks we see on the WI side of the river with MN license plate is still the same. Our prices are so much cheaper than MN. I don’t think MN will compete because of the prices.
tanglerInactivePosts: 812July 22, 2019 at 9:52 am #1868746The law change wasn’t explicitly designed to help liquor stores be more profitable, but rather to give the people who run those stores the same freedom to operate their business 7 days a week as others have, and of course to generate tax revenue for the state.
Any liquor store who doesn’t think it’s worth it to be open 7 days a week is free to change their hours and close for 1 day a week. (Somehow I doubt they would choose Sunday to close…)

This. I personally buy on Sundays all the time. Saves a trip to Hudson, which really offsets any higher MN price vs WI price. Stores are free to stay closed or limit hours on Sunday if they’d like, but the previous law was antiquated.
I also wish Chick-fil-A was open on Sundays…
July 22, 2019 at 10:13 am #1868755A liquor store owner I know well says Sunday and Monday are the two slowest days of the week for sales, with Monday being the worst. People have been in the mode where they know to keep some on hand if they plan to drink on Sundays for so long that it’s not making much of a difference.
He also said that Sunday is a hard day to find staff to work. His best options are very part-timers who have other main jobs and are just looking to pick up a few extra bucks on their days off. There’s a lot of turnover with those types of employees. Someone who works 5 hours a week is probably not the most useful employee either.
Also, the additional day has forced some liquor store employees into full-time status, thus requiring health insurance options to be provided by the company, which is very costly.
I don’t think this was a very popular move amongst liqour store owners, but like Tangent said, they can just stay closed on Sunday and all of the issues I mentioned go away.
July 22, 2019 at 10:27 am #1868759The two off sales I’ve been to have a SR discount on Tuesdays. I would of thought that would of been the slowest day(?)
Woodshed on Trenton Island across from Red Wing has 3 (count them, three) 30 packs of Hamm’s for $33.00 every day AND only 5.5% sales tax. Always open on Sundays to boot! LOL!

I think Steve is right!
$14.99 for a suitcase of Hamm’s is outrageous! I wouldn’t pay anywhere near that much for such a substandard unworthy adult beverage.July 22, 2019 at 1:56 pm #1868845<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>Brian Klawitter wrote:</div>
