I don’t get the hand holding analogy? He’s concerned for the poor slave labor. He doesn’t realize that the bait store would have to open. Or would it? I guess that’s their choice. #lifeshard
Not what I meant… if you said no selling minnows on sunday, then your talking apples to apples. Fishing is an act, you cannot fish more on friday to make up for sunday, but you can “attempt” buy enough liquor for sunday on friday… And your fishing on sunday does not require anybody to “open brick and mortar” like selling liquor does. No comparison at all.
The fact that this is a heated debate actually makes me laugh. Sometimes I wish I lived in MN because of all the great public fishing but then things like this make me happy I’m in Iowa.
Holy cow, how is this a controversial topic at all? Don’t want to buy liquor on sundays, then don’t.
Eroding society? What are you people on.

Every American should be obligated to take an early Americas history lesson. Not the fluff they give you in high school, but a good semester long college course. There are many excellent ones out there free for download.
BC mudshark you are absolutely wrong on this point. Benjamin Franklin probably wined and dined with more Cardinals than the Pope himself. OK lil joke there, but the facts are what they are.
Have people forgotten this great country was founded on Christian values? All of a sudden we are a secular state now or what?
Yes, you are correct. We are a secular state but it wasn’t all of a sudden. It’s written into our Constitution under the 1st Amendment.
OK, lets get real controversial
What happens if liquor prices go up because of the extra overhead of being open one more day and sales not keeping up with the extra costs?
WAS THIS GIVEN ANY THOUGHT????
WHERE WILL THIS LEAD?
COULD THIS BE THE END ON MANKIND AS WE KNOW IT??
heated ? who is butthurt ?
Well Dutchboy did say he wishes I would drink myself into a coma. If that’s not a heated response from him id hate to see what he looks like when heated

Obviously this will lead to more Competition from other sales outlets. It will not be long before you simply buy your booze at the local Cub foods, Target, or the corner gas station. The competition will even out the playing field. Liquor stores should not have a monopoly!

There is zero increase to overhead costs for being open 1 extra day. Rent, insurance, utilities, etc all are the same costs whether you are open 6 days vs 7. Its not like they shut off the coolers when they aren’t open. The only cost that will go up will be labor which can easily be offset be increased sales.

Will more alcohol be sold? Doubt it. People arent going to drink more because the store is open an extra day. They have bought it on friday on the way home from work or whatever to plan ahead for the weekend. I dont buy 1 banana from the store and when that banana is consumed I dont make a special trip to get 1 or 2 more. I plan ahead and buy enough to last me until the next trip to the store. Why would liquor be different.

I thought we all agreed increased sales were likely miniscule at best?
I guess maybe all them miscreants running across the borders might spend locally? If the $ spent in MN on Sunday is significant, I guess liquor prices in Hudson could go up?
…it won’t be different. Sales per man hour for the day/week/month/year will go down (store owners words not mine…) RR

It’s not, true that you’re happy to be in Iowa that is.
I added the jester so as not to start a controversy.
I see several references to this new rule eventually leading to the purchasing of alcohol in grocery stores and other retail. How is this related?
We going to assume that this is a slippery slope? That will be the step that would run out the local ma and pa liquor stores.

It won’t make any difference if liquor is sold on Sunday at all. Everybody who drinks now will also drink on Sunday, maybe Tuesday and maybe even Monday before work, What I’m saying is the people who drink now will drink then, it just won’t be as important to buy booze on Saturday so you can drink it on Sunday. Hey honey should I make a beer run? naaaa their open on Sunday so we’ll get it then. I don’t think sales will go up or down, just spread out to a 7 days sales instead of 6, at the end of the week the sales will still be the same.
Do they sell cigarettes in Minnesota on Sundays?
Yeah, they all be lit by the fires of Mordor.
OK, lets get real controversial

Busch Light used to be cheaper than soda. Is it still that way?
I’ve always thought this issue was quite petty to be discussing so heavily and a waste of legislator’s time. After reading 5 pages of strong varying opinions, I was wrong, and now after hearing about this new proposed bill, the Sunday liquor sales bill and law seems so much more warranted. This is beyond ridiculous.

What if your buddy stopped over unexpectedly with his pet monkey on Saturday night and he ate the last banana?

As long as the monkey doesn’t drive home after consuming the last bananas, I’m OK with whatever..

We aren’t having a special session for this? WTH?
Do people actually drive across the border on Sunday’s to purchase alcohol? I get it if somebody from Lakeland, MN drives to Hudson, WI, and MAYBE somebody from the eastern most of Woodbury drives to Hudson. But from how far are people actually driving on Sunday? Nobody is really driving more than 10 minutes out of their way to do something they could have done any 6 other days of the week?

Keep in mind that there are those who have a serious problem with alcohol and would think nothing of driving 30 miles for it if the stores were closed in MN.
Whether or not Sunday liquor store sales would justify the expense of being open remains to be seen. I doubt that I’ll give any of them any business since I’m fine with a plain old Coke, or Ginger Ale or Pepsi.
