Have a small Orthodox Jew customer base, and the Sabbath ain’t nothing to mess with. Could be a bit annoying years ago when first working with them BC of those Saturdays you wanted stuff done, but man, after doing this kind of work and living the average Merican life the thought of taking a set time every week to reflect and be with family and friends is a pretty sweet deal.

Not saying its strictly religious beliefs for people that are against it, but that merely a day off for folks from working or maybe even from getting snickered up can be a really good thing. I for one am tired of seven days a week go go go.

Unfortunately, IMO, we’re way too far down the erosion road to play that card.

No one is stopping you from taking a day for family or reflection, etc. If we need the government to tell us we need to take a day off from (insert whatever) then yes, we really are too far down the rabbit hole.

Dunno if this thread is a lost cause already, but I was wondering if this will have any impact on breweries. In the near past we have seen a boom in breweries/taprooms due to fairly rapid changes in these older laws. One of the nice things that eventually came about was the legalizing of growler sales on Sundays. I like that a brewery is a local business, with local employees that makes and distributes a local product from start to finish. I have bought a few growlers on Sunday – but I have no idea how that day’s sale volume compares to the rest.

I assume breweries profit most from their taprooms or with distribution (if they distribute), but who knows.

I was hardly dry a Sunday in my life, that I didn’t want to be. Gotta be smarter than the calendar though, but not if they change the law. toast

Well if the liquor stores were smart enough to sell bottles of “hooch” this size on Saturdays, you’d certainly hope that they wouldn’t need to be open on Sunday! razz

“but if they do open sales on Sunday why don’t the offer sales at 1:00am as well?”

Joe, it’s easier to catch drunken drivers if the bars close at 1 or 2 am rather then letting out any old time or worse yet, letting them sober up inside a bar.

Just a thought but like many of the above, there’s too much time wasted on something so trivial. (IMHO)

I cannot believe this is at 4 pages.

I THINK when dutchy refers to the erosion of society I think it refers to things like Thanksgiving Day sales. Believe it or not, our government has done some good things to promote good family values.

We would never have that if it weren’t for our leaders putting laws in place to facilitate these things. The more I think about it, the more our government needs to guide us to be a successful society.

Personally I don’t think that Sunday off sale liquor is going to make a damn bit of difference. As some have already mentioned about the old days, there were many more laws in place that promoted good family values but they are all but gone now. So now we are left with 50-60 hour work weeks and we spend less than 2 hours a week with our children because their face is planted firmly in their phone or they’re off to sports 6 days a week. I’m sure that Sunday ban will be up for grabs too.

In my opinion the insane level of commitment required by some youth sports is a much bigger drain on family time than whether a person can hit the liquor store on Sunday.

Here’s my take… You can’t legalize marijuana if you can’t even sell liquor 7 days a week. Our sister hipster states like Colorado, Washington, Oregon have legalize it…its only a matter of time for MN and I think this needed to be done first.

Recreational marijuana was a given as soon as everyone saw the tax dollars that will be generated. Colorado has a state level 10% tax on the sale, on top of the sales tax, and on top of any local taxes. 20% tax revenues on the sale has legislatures seeing dollar signs.
It’s only a matter of time before they get their hands on that revenue stream.

What if there was a law where fishing was closed on Sunday? And you thought it was a dumb law and you wanted to be able to fish Sunday, but people who couldn’t fish on Sunday or prefered to rest said, “You have 6 other days to fish, if you can’t figure out how to fish then, you have other problems. You don’t need to fish on Sunday. Cuz I said so.”.

As I read through this thread, I have to sit and wonder if this topic was even discussed for more than 4 hrs in any other state.. Cant figure out why every petty bill turns into a 3 year discussion? Its not totally the legislature, its every Tom, Dick & Harry in MN that has to throw their arms up at the thought of change that does not effect their life in the least..

Sorry just venting, because im still mad I cant put a scope on my muzzleloader. devil

The real question is not whether the political community will legislate morality; the question is which vision of morality will be enforced and by what sort of government.

If you had to have somebody hold your hand while you fish, and they never had to hold your hand before on Sunday because fishing was closed on sundays, that is the difference.

I cant believe this thread has garnered over 100 posts! Maybe some of you have come to this conclusion already and im just speaking to the choir but, I think the real reason why this is so controversial has at its core to do with religion. Sunday is traditionally a day of rest in the Christian faith. And this tradition has come into many MN families whether your family celebrates Christianity or not, so it amounts to a change from what’s customary. This is how many families viewed this day and the activities of that day followed the Christian ideas of reflection and taking time away from the grind to be with family.

I didn’t realize this was such a heated subject when I posted this.
Personally I never understood why liquor wasn’t sold on Sundays and I thought it was cool that this would no longer be the case. Now I realize that Sundays mean a lot more to some people and the thought of liquor (and the sometimes vile and corrosive behavior that accompanies it) being sold on this day is offensive to those that think of Sundays as something more sacred.

    Or, maybe im wrong.

Have people forgotten this great country was founded on Christian values? All of a sudden we are a secular state now or what?

The conservative talking point of free choice is getting nauseous. There is and always was a moral compass as said earlier with government and to scoff at the fact this is a silly law does no justice to the debates that should be had for it.

He’s concerned for the poor slave labor. He doesn’t realize that the bait store would have to open. Or would it? I guess that’s their choice. #lifeshard

I still don’t understand how morality erodes by having a store open.

The whole thing reminds me when conceal and carry was going through the legislation. The interesting thing is I would have sort have been on the other side. I had these visions in my head of the wild, wild west breaking out and a rise in people getting shot.
