We will now be able to buy liquor on Sundays in MN! Personally, im excited for this as time and time again I forget to buy liquor before the game or before I go fishing etc… Ive heard the concerns from some that this will hurt small business owners as they will not be able to afford to stay open an extra day. Im hopeful that this will not hurt their operations. If it does I will try to do my part by spending more money at the local booze shop over the big box store.

It’s not a done deal yet. The House and Senate bills are different so they either have to go back to the House to pass the Senate version or agree to a Conference Committee to hammer out a final version.
Then Governor Trustfund has to actually sign it. He has a history of shooting down bills that would have kept spending inside of Minnesota rather than sending it to neighboring states, so we’ll see if he actually signs this one.
I agree re the concerns about the impact on small businesses. I buy most of our beer and spirits from family owned Oak Liquor in Oakdale because I love the people who own it, so I hope this doesn’t have a negative impact on businesses like this.
But I also have to say that it’s time to clear the books of these ancient prohibition-era laws that just prevent dollars from getting spent in Minnesota.

February 27, 2017 at 4:25 pm #1677234Governor Trustfund did say he wont get in the way of the bill. My understanding is the difference in bills between House and Senate comes down to the time frame which the stores will be open on Sunday. Im sure they will be able to come to a decision on that.
TipUpFishOnPosts: 153February 27, 2017 at 4:26 pm #1677235I think Dayton will sign this one, he said he’ll sign it so hopefully he keeps his word. Both sides do have to agree on what time stores can open/sell, etc. as noted. Sounds like in the end it’s going to go through.
Regarding the concerns about small businesses, I’ve read that some folks are concerned about people in rural areas finding big stores on Sundays and not returning to smaller stores thereafter plus the costs of keeping a smaller business open the extra day. I’m no business owner so maybe I’m naive but can’t smaller stores stay closed if they feel like they can’t turn a profit being open the extra day? They don’t HAVE to be open on Sundays. I know a small business never wants to turn a potential customer away but I think that if someone is shopping at a smaller store because of proximity or because of the people, they’re going to still shop there M-Sa even if they have to venture to a bigger store on Sundays.
deertrackerPosts: 9151February 27, 2017 at 4:31 pm #1677237Shoot, what will I do at work Sundays then if this goes through? Right now I watch the out of state plates pull up to the liquor store and stare wondering why there are no lights on.
DTFebruary 27, 2017 at 4:37 pm #1677241why do they ever close ? 24/7/365 I say
Have to agree. Was a trip to walk into a gas station in New York and buy a tall boy at 3am in the coolers right next to the soda pop.
“They don’t HAVE to be open on Sundays. ”
they certainly don’t. I follow your line of reasoning and I think its a possibility that it wont hurt the little guys too much but we wont know until a while after the law goes into affect. If I were a small business owner, and the cost of running the business on Sundays proved to hurt my bottom dollar, I would probably have customized Sunday hours – Open from 8AM-2PM during football season, open in the winter cause everyone drinks more in the winter and doesn’t want to commute far to the big box store…. there could be some new options presented to them to get creative with it. A positive person might look at it as a new opportunity not a detriment.
zooksPosts: 922February 27, 2017 at 4:47 pm #1677243Dayton has said in the past he will sign it if it hits his desk, so as long as everyone plays nice in the conference committees, it will finally be passed.
I try to do most of my shopping at independent stores, either Princeton Liquors by my office or Liquor Boy near home and avoid MGM/Costco/Sam’s/Total Wine out of principle.
Make it up to the small business owner whether they think it’s worth the $$ and effort. I know a couple I’ve talked to say they hate paying a lease for 7 days of the week when they’re only able to be open for 6 of them and I agree with that thinking. Not sure how others will feel about it but I know Liquor Boy supports Sunday sales, which was another reason why I like going there.

DTThat’s pretty funny, too.
February 27, 2017 at 4:56 pm #1677248You know, this kind of progress in Minnesota gives me the feeling that anything’s possible.
I mean, first we have the restoration of the fundamental and God-given right to buy liquor on Sunday.
What’s next? I mean, the sky’s the limit in Minnesota now, so let’s dream big!
Legal fireworks? Buying a car on Sunday? I mean the sky’s the limit now! The Killjoy Dam has finally burst! Let freedom ring.

February 27, 2017 at 5:05 pm #1677250It’s all about the money. Some people would whore out their daughter for a buck. If you aren’t smart enough to buy the other 6 days in a week I don’t know that you should be drinking anyway.
I’m against it if you can’t tell.
February 27, 2017 at 5:08 pm #1677253There are still small ma n pa liquor stores in other Sunday sale states correct? Why would MN be any different??

just curious, why are you against it Dutch?
February 27, 2017 at 5:15 pm #1677258It’s part of the erosion of our society. I’m not going to explain it, either you get it or you don’t.
February 27, 2017 at 5:17 pm #1677261Please keep the car dealers closed on Sunday. It’s the only good time to shop the lots.

geez ok. I’m not a mind reader but that’s fine if you don’t want to explain.

I’m sorry, but what? I’d love to hear your full explanation on this one, because apparently I dont get it. Not at all looking to start an argument here, just am curious as to why one would be so against it
February 27, 2017 at 5:44 pm #1677278Pfft, you aren’t in the modern age until you can buy beer and wine from a Walgreens.
Honestly, for me it’s only nice when there is a holiday on Monday and you didn’t buy enough on Friday. Other than that, it’s not that exciting.
I did hear there is a bill here for allowing hard liquor in the grocery store. It’s so dumb. I go get groceries and beer from the grocery store and then have to walk 20 feet to get hard liqour from the grocery store’s liqour store.
February 27, 2017 at 5:48 pm #1677279Instead of explaining why I’m against it, why don’t you guys give me one valid reason (beyond money) why to legalize Sunday sales.
February 27, 2017 at 5:59 pm #1677285I see Dutchy’s reasoning. Being in the car business, I am fortunate enough no not have to work Saturday very often, but most Sales people do. They get sunday to spend with their family… that’s it. Yeah they get Tuesday or Wednesday off because they work saturday, but at that time, the wife is probably at work and the kids at school. On the same token, if car dealers open sundays, now what ? For anyone in another field of work, if you were told, BTW your now working saturdays and sundays, because someone forgot to buy their car on wednesday, how would you feel ? It is an erosion of the family like it or not… some call it progress. I know when there is a holiday in question, whether dealerships will close or not in St Cloud anyways, the owners all talk amongst themselves, if one stays open, they all have to stay open… it’s about the $$$ and losing sales and customers. If you go to XYZ liquor on a sunday, because Gordo’s is a small ma and pa shop and not open and you kinda like the bigger selection at XYZ… it soon becomes your go to place and Gordo’s is forgotten. It’s how things are going now.

Convenience?
As for people having to work weekends and mom and pop shops closing, you could make the same argument for a lot of industries. Maybe we should close all retailers and grocery stores on Sunday and all just rest, because life isn’t fair.
How about Chick-fil-A? They do fine for not being open on Sundays, their choice.
February 27, 2017 at 6:08 pm #1677287How will all the small liquor stores survive across the river here in Wisconsin if they can buy on Sunday in MN. Have you no decency…

That’s Dutchys point… all about the $$$. Retailers were rarely open on Sundays way back when. Some call it progress, some erosion of the traditional family. Times are constantly changing, no matter how hard we try to stop it… I always swore I would never criticize todays generations, the way mine was when I was growing up… but man…. it’s hard !!!!
February 27, 2017 at 6:27 pm #1677292Big G, wouldn’t you say its not “today’s generation” making this change. How many millenials would you find in our state congress or house? None I’d think. Not trying to start an argument, just saying. As a guy in his 20s, getting tired of the millennials suck line. I think the biggest thing here is convenience. Its 2017, I think we should be able to order beer online and have it to my doorstep in less than an hour!!
February 27, 2017 at 6:49 pm #1677301I choose not to buy on sunday if I do not want to. I will choose not to sell on Sunday if I do not want to. I choose to make a more of an effort to sway those to my establishment before sunday. Like squirls and rabbits and cats is there to many feeders?
