I bought too many last night and now I have them all crammed into a 10 gallon aquarium. Just wondering what you guys do in this kind of situation. Just get rid of them and cut your losses, or invest in a bigger aquarium for them. 2 died already over night.

had the ones that died previously been hooked? I’ve always found them to be extremely hard to kill. I currently have half a dozen nice sized bullhead in a 5 gallon bucket. I’ve always found as long as I keep a bubbler in there they will survive weeks. instead of an actual aquarium go to Target and buy one of those cheap Rubbermaid totes. I think you can get them upwards of 50 gallons. that should house plenty of bull head.

One of them was hooked, that died. Maybe the stress of it all took a toll on them because 2 more died today. But the 10 that are left seem healthy. I will have to try that rubbermaid idea though seems

Water temp has a lot to do with it. Seems bullies are dirty things to, need to change the water more often than suckers or minnows.

But I agree this time of year a 5gallon bucket would do fine. Gives you more incentive to go fish to use em up.

I would love to get them used up. This is the first year I have ever done this. So far the results have been fair at best. Hopefully I can get out at least 1 more time before they spawn.

Not to worry Rick. They don’t all spawn at the same time.

A old cooler also works and is probably better. I’ve used both. I leave the cover on, but leave it cracked so fresh air can get in and exchange with the CO2. I considered modifying my cooler by drilling a hole for the air line, but realized that would prevent the CO2 Oxygen exchange. The agitation and circulation of the water is really what keeps the oxygen levels up. Plus, I don’t want fish jumping out or critters getting in and drowning.

A pump from a pet store with a stone or a Frabill pump from the bait store will do it.

I have had 3 shiners and a dozen minnows survive for 2 weeks in the shade of the Florida heat. Think I lost just 1 shiner and 2 minnows. Granted, these are not the more delicate shiners you find up there. But bullheads are far more hardy.

You have to be careful with disease too. In warm water it’ll knock off the bullheads pretty quick because they are in close quarters, it spreads quick. This could be what is happening to yours.
