Get a G1 if you want an evinrude. Get a Honda or Yamaha if you want a reliable motor.
Everyone has a opinion on motors, trucks, beer, girls, BBQ grills, boats.
Not a expert in this whole place. Your cash, your choice.
They’ve had a tough past…..
It’s been a coin toss with a G1. Half of the used boats with one hanging on the back say “new powerhead in 20XX”
I personally know three guys that have popped one (out of four guys I know that have owned a G1)
The G2’s are supposedly better, but they’re still relatively new to the market. A quick search will show they aren’t bulletproof either.
If I were buying a new outboard today, they would still be awful far down the list. Sour taste stays in your mouth the longest.
They are noticeably louder, too. I was amazed when side by side with my Yamaha how loud the evinrudes were.
I would agree at idle the Yamaha’s are much quieter than the Etec’s, but wide open yamaha’s are pretty loud. Louder than an Etec. The one thing I don’t get or agree with is how the 4 strokes are supposed to have so much low end torque compared to a two stroke. I have had both an Etec and a yamaha 4 stroke both 225’s and there was no comparison. The 4 stroke was a turd out of the hole. I have a verado now and my Etec was quicker than the verado too. I never had any big issues with my 2 Etec’s other than an injector on one. I haven’t been in a boat with a G2. I wouldn’t hesitate buying one.

I’ve personally never owned a boat that had a 4 stroke motor so the sound isn’t an issue for me. It’s between Suzuki and Evinrude for me but I’m worried I will be disappointed with the Suzuki performance out of the hole knowing that the Evinrude is superior in that regard.

That’s the opposite of everything I’ve ever heard.
My only issue with E-tec design, and it goes for the outboards and the snowmobiles – a Bombardier mechanic explained to me, that because the E-tec’s run so lean on oil, the main crank case bearings are sealed, self-lubricating. Those bearing inherently fail over time, develop leaks, wear out, etc… His words, its like planned obsolescence, they will fail eventually. I am not a mechanic, and this is just from his words, but I switched to Yammy shortly after that and have not looked back.

State your opinion on an outboard motor = respectful discussion.
State your opinion on a President = all hell breaks loose?
My vote goes for a Honda or Mercury.
When I was looking for a new boat last summer E tech was the deal breaker on a lot of nice boats. Been 15 years since I owned a E tech. Still to soon to own another.

Yep, he got that one backwards. The low end torque of the 2 stroke is its only selling point.
Glad to hear I misunderstood, because it clearly wasn’t true about 2 stroke low end versus 4 strokes.

I don’t know, I personally love a whiff of 2-stroke exhaust.

I got rid of my Evinrude 150ho and went to a Suzuki 150ss. It is better out of the hole and top end. I haven’t been in a boat with the g2’s but idling next to one, I couldn’t believe how loud they actually are. I won’t own another Evinrude.
What size and type of boat are you looking at?
Best thing I can recommend is to talk to the dealers in town that sell Evinrude, Mercury, Suzuki, Yamaha. They can provide a less biased opinion because they sell/service them all.
I had this conversation recently with the Sales Manager at one of these dealerships and hint… there aren’t many dealers that sell all of these brands in town. That should narrow it down… Anyway, it was worth the conversation.
Unbiased opinion from a sales person? Think you would be searching for a unicorn there.

A lot of my questions were specific around actual warranty returns of the various brands to hopefully get a less biased or anecdotal response. Could still get that but knowing this person (have bought from before) and getting actual data I found helpful.
In my opinion do not care who makes it or color it is if you get a Lemon you got a Lemon, if you got a good one you got a good one. Never fails there are always some that will be a pain in the a-s. Evinrude is the only outboard manufacturer that it comes with a 7 year warranty on all there Etec`s. Me I am a Mercury guy but would have no qualms on putting on a Etec with free 7 year warranty they have to beleive in there product, all other manufactures you have to purchase an extended warranty.
My Yamaha came with a 5 year warranty. Probably because they know the warranty claims wont get much use… I wouldn’t bet the same on a Etec.
my Suzuki came with a 6 year warranty. ironically i actually had to use it on a failed starter for the kicker motor
I was also skepitical … But after almost 400 hours not a hiccup with my E Tech. I have a 10 year warranty. I have been impressed. no down time at all

Go to a saltwater forum to get info from current model owners. A lot of saltwater guys run hundreds of hours a year on duals or triples, not a few dozen hours on a single like the average MN walleye guy. And salt guys run year round, so they tend to wear out motors and repower much more often.
Florida Sportsman is a great source.

You might be right. Thinking back the dealership I was working with told me they would not take my 3 year old E tech for a trade in. They also advised me to “sell it to someone that I don’t know.” Doesn’t get much more honest than that.
Only 3 ways I ever own a Evinrude,
1) The virus is cured and gone tomorrow morning by 8 am central time.
2) ……………ok, I can’t think of any other reason I would ever own one.
It’s a joke boys & girls.
