With Brp quitting production, how hesitant would you be to buying a boat with an e-tec on it. I know resale value isn’t up to par as a merc or Yamaha. Anyone with horror stories of the newer e tec having issues like the first gen??

Dealbreaker for me – parts are hard enough to find on current production motors…
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23373February 5, 2022 at 10:04 am #2096922If it’s over 115 HP I’d run not walk away from it. The larger units had a history of power head failures. Buddy just bought a 60k boat for 40k because it had a blown etec on it.
February 5, 2022 at 10:07 am #2096925I would not have even bought a boat with one when they were in production…
February 5, 2022 at 10:09 am #2096926It’s the newer etec (2016) 250hp not the ones of yesteryear with the known issues. I just haven’t heard of many issues with the G2,
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23373February 5, 2022 at 10:22 am #2096929They did have issues. The boat my buddy just bought had a 3 year old g2 on it.
RipjiggenPosts: 11824February 5, 2022 at 12:16 pm #2096946Not a forum I would ask on Justin…just sayin…
I would talk to guys that put more than 20 hours on there motors a year.February 5, 2022 at 8:12 pm #2096986Everyone loves to hate on Evinrude motors but MOST are basing current model opinions on their experiences from older models, which have been dicey. 2 years ago, I would love to own a G2. With BRP now out of the outboard market, I’m on the fence…the G2 engines are supposed to be great but the unknown is still there in parts.
Iowaboy1Posts: 3827February 5, 2022 at 8:20 pm #2096990From what I understand in talking to my vendors, BRP will provide parts for ten more years counting last year, so nine years left for parts availability.
Edit to add, anything can change at a moments notice.

What others have said, if you are buying today at a discount what will be the discount be if trying to sell or trade in say 6 years?
I’m not a E-Tec guy, it’s not my money, you have to do what you feel is right for you.
mnfisherman18Posts: 384February 6, 2022 at 9:37 am #2097057I would not touch one, they were completely excluded from my search. The discounts I have seen in the market are not steep enough for me to consider one. With that said, the G2’s probably get more crap than they deserve.
February 6, 2022 at 11:48 am #2097091With supply being so hard to come by right now I would not be buying an out of production unit. Suppliers are having a hard enough time making parts for current production, the odds of the shutting that down to make service parts is very slim right now. They say they will offer parts for 10 years, I beleive they will, it just may be on backorder for the first 5 years.
DeucesPosts: 5268February 6, 2022 at 11:53 am #2097094One has to take into consideration the rather limited viewpoint of Midwest anglers.
More and more trips to the intercoastal waters shows a guy the thousands and thousands of etecs hanging off rigs.
That simply is a huge market for parts, more importantly lucrative parts for companies. Trust the dollar.

That was my point earlier. I would ask the guys that run their motors for 1000’s of hours vs guys that run them till they think 300 is a lot. I would also look at who in your area is Evinrude certified. They may not be selling them so asking them about what if any issues they are seeing. JMHO
mnfisherman18Posts: 384February 6, 2022 at 12:16 pm #2097103Solid logic above, but wouldn’t that push you even further away from an Evinrude? I have been to the coasts a variety of times and Yamaha is typically dominant with Merc’s/Suzuki’s/Honda’s all mixed in. Rarely have seen any Evinrude’s based on my experience.
RipjiggenPosts: 11824February 7, 2022 at 6:54 pm #2097534If the price is right I would not have a problem buying a boat with an Etec Gen 2, there are many out there running trouble free for many hours. I would just make sure that when I bought the boat I had leeway if it did turn south on me. Any used boat and motor you buy can go south in a hurry.
February 7, 2022 at 8:43 pm #2097566I was never a fan once the company was bought out from bankruptcy. Less of a fan now. JMO
February 8, 2022 at 7:23 am #2097613I ran a 2016 300 G2 worst motor I ever owned. In one season I had it in the shop 3 times for over $11k in warranty work and each repair was 2-3 weeks to be completed. Best thing I ever did was send that rig down the road.

I still have 3 brand new G2 250s in the garage and one still on my personal bass boat with over 400 hours on it without any issues what so ever. They still make parts and I still get my engines serviced with out any issues what so ever and I’m still in contact with some of the top guys at BRP and there are no issues what so ever. Now on my new Boats I run Mercury which is a great motor but I will be honest with you nothing beats the torque and performance of the G2 I was heart broken when I heard the news, I was on tour and got a phone call while on the lake fishing and I didn’t know what to do other than I knew I was going to be looking for a new engine sponsor along with about 30 other BRP pros. I still love the G2 and has been and will continue to be a great motor, just like all brands they all have their issues some good and some bad..If the opportunity comes up for some of you guys to own one and if its in your budget they are a great motor and will run great I see guys all the time with them and still swear by them. For some of us old school guys we all grew up with our granddaddy’s old Johnson or Evinrude hanging off the back of the ole john boat that are still running to this very day..Hell I have a 1998 Johnson 225 Venom with about 90 hours on it that still runs like a damn champion..

Aboxy17Posts: 433February 27, 2023 at 1:31 pm #2184788Great experience with a 2011 Etec 50hp tiller. Rock solid motor with no problems ran great. Downgrading to a 2011 Etec 25hp because I will be fishing exclusively in the Ely area this summer.

Yea those G2 motors are great. You only need to KEEP 3 spares in your garage.
isu22andyPosts: 1805February 27, 2023 at 6:45 pm #2184890I think I’ve seen one or two rudes in Florida in the 10 trips I’ve been down there . I’m sure they’re fine but I wouldn’t want to deal with it . They say they’re gonna make parts for ten years .. at what price ? And talk is cheap . Executive change could change that in a minute .
OnthewaterPosts: 266February 27, 2023 at 10:39 pm #2184922Everyone knows if they spend their money on one, they now have 0 chance of selling it without taking a huge beating when trying to sell. Plus, it’s going to sit there forever compared to anything with a 4 stroke. You might not like it, but that’s how it is. An outboard that was doomed from the start. How they didn’t know it then is really unbelievable. I’m sure that company learned their lesson and will start offering outboards that will last and sell better than any other motor that has come before it

February 28, 2023 at 7:45 am #2184949Yep. If I had spare motors and good connections for getting mine worked on might still have that motor.
No,not a chance. Was very close to unbolting mine and letting it sink in the river one day.
February 28, 2023 at 10:35 am #2185034It is funny to me how 2 different sports view HPDI engines like the eTec totally differently.
Anglers – “No way would I buy one of those unreliable outboards that use antiquated technology. The world has moved on, the G2 was doomed from the start. 4 stokes forever.”
Snowmobilers – “You’ll have to pry my eTec/HPDI 2 stroke from my cold, dead hands. No way am I ever riding those fat, bloated, slow, unresponsive 4 strokes. I want power, torque, and an engine that can handle high revs without blowing up. 2 strokes all the way.”
February 28, 2023 at 12:06 pm #2185066If I am buying something today, the rig with a G2 would have to have a substantial cost savings…not just a couple grand. I’ve been on quite a few boats running G2’s and cannot bash the reliability or performance, but my opinions are more on the resale side.
One of the fastest tritoons I’ve seen has twin 300hp G2’s on it. It’s a 60mph tritoon all day on the river even without glass conditions.

I think I’ve seen this guy on the river between Hastings and prescott. Fun looking rig!
