Evinrude Ficht 1999,90 hp. Facts & myths

I am new to this website and hope I meet new friends. And if I have posted this topic in the wrong place let me know. What I have read about the old Evinrude Ficht outboard motor has really upset me and the wrong information is being passed around that they are junk motors and to stay away from them. Well I have news for those who believe everything they read good or bad. But the truth is the Evinrude ficht outboard is a workhorse of a motor. I have my 1999 90hp ficht for about 15 years now and it has never let me down. Does it have a quirk about it? Yes it loves spark plugs, I have to replace them 2 times a year. But at the cost of $25.00 to change them I’ll take it. So to all my new and old friends don’t let a good ol ficht pass you by if it should come available to you. Watch what you buy and do your research but you can’t go wrong with the Evinrude ficht outboard.

You are the first person I have heard of that hasn’t had it melt down. Congrats, you should be buying lottery tickets.

Gifted my 2003 521 Ranger Comanche with a 250 ficht to my step kids 2wks ago, that motor has never had any issue & runs like a cheetah. They ran it hard in Ely for a week over opener, no issue. I did change plugs every fall while winterizing.

I am glad there are those who have had a good experience with FICHT but it was that technology that OMC never mastered and drove the company into bankruptcy. Their two strokes were the choice of Canadian resorts for their incredible reliability. I bot a 1996 Evinrude 60hp 2-stroke and it still hangs on the back of my Sylvan Pro Select.

I wouldn’t touch that motor. My Grandpa had one and nothing but problems

I hear nothing but bad news about them. If the entire customer supply quit then I’m going to say that it might be a issue.
I have a 90 erude that’s bullet proof but it’s not a big fitch motor.
I think they spent to much on the looks and not enough on interior

EVINRUDE FICHT 1999,90 HP. FACTS & MYTHS

This seems like such a weird first post to me. Your title says facts in it but you only give your experience with one motor as a fact and then go on to say your experience would apply to all ficht motors. The ficht engines debate has long been settled that the technology never lived up to the hype. Heck they had to change the name to E-tech to get out from under the negativity that the ficht name generated. Wouldn’t touch one with the proverbial 10′ foot pole. Glad your ficht worked out so well for you and I am sure others have had good success. Trying to tell others to not worry and purchase a ficht though seems like bad advice.

Posted by a new guy who hasn’t been back since. A hit & run post it looks like. Maybe he has a Ficht he is trying to sell and is trying to turn public opinion?

Anyway, welcome to IDO (if you come back) hope you enjoy the motor and it lasts a long time for you. Not every bomb didn’t work for everybody. There are still Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega & AMC Pacer fans out there also.

i ALSO HAVE A 90HP , 1999 EVINRUDE FICHT,, ONNLY USE SYNTHENIC OIL SINCE I HEARD FROM MECHANICS ABOUT HEAD PROBLEMS AND CARBON BUILD UP FROM TROLLING. I WAS TOLD TO “RUN IT LIKE I JUST STOLE IT ” BY MECHANIC. BOUGHT NEW WHEN I RETIRED 23 YEARS AGO. JUST HAD TO REPLACE THE PEE CONNECTION AT BACK OF ENGINE,, PLASTIC CAP CRACKED,, COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW CLEAN AND WELL PRESERVED HOSES AND EXHAUST LOOKED. IT LOOKED LIKE A NEW ENGINE. SHE’S GGREAT ON GAS,, DOESN’T SMOKE, VERY STRONG , AND PUSHES MY 17FT ALUMACRAFT ALONG AT 40MPH. WAS TOLD BY EVINRUDE MECHANIC TO STAY AWAY FROM TROLLING AND RUN IT HARD AND THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS,, IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW,, THEY BUILD A GREAT ENGINE, JUST DID NOT FIGURE ON TROLLING ALOT. ALSO I USE SNYTHENIC OIL AND WHEN PULLLED APART LOWER COWL EXHAUST ONLY HAD A LITE COATING. I WOULD BUY A NEW ONE OF THESE IN A HEART BEAT.GREAT ENGINE,, JUST TAKE CARE OF IT. JOHNPERRY, WISCONSIN.

I’m not sure if there’s a reason you have your caps lock on, but your post would be easier viewing for us if it wasn’t.

I didn’t notice the date until it was pointed out. I am thinking this guy came on here to complain because no one wanted to buy his boat since it had a ficht motor on it. I am glad some have had luck with them. I wouldn’t buy one.

John, I would rather have you leave them on and post then to take them off and not post.

I put my boat motor in paper last year,, was sick for a while and thought maybe i should sell it,, before i had a chance a day later to take it out of paper (wife talked me outta it ) i had 3 people coming to look at it and had no price haggling in ad. I agree there are some bad ones out there,, the 150’s i remember started it,,blowing heads,,i think changing oil to synthetic and how i drive saved me,, and maint. When in army we had WW2 equipment that looked and ran like new,, just needed care and main·te·nance. Just take care of it Travis,,you’ll be fine.Hard to find mechanics that still work on them is the biggest problem,, even here in Milwaukee i only found 2 out of many outboard repair places.
Take care guys,, got me worked up now,, think i’ll hook it up and get out there for awhile,, fishing has been awesome ! JOP

Forgot the Yugo. I believe a couple of those were Motor Trend car of the year when they came out. For what that’s worth. Yeah.. I’m that old too! I worked at a Chevy dealer, doing warranty work on Vegas in the mid 70’s. Full time job.
