Essential GoPro Camera Fishing Mounts

Anyone who has a GoPro or any camera, I’d appreciate feedback on mounts, especially for when fishing solo. I have a tripod. I am thinking about the chest mount, although I don’t like that angle, and a clamp, so I could clamp it to a gunwale of a yak, canoe or boat and get some cool angles.

The clamp is a key part. U can clamp it to the net as well and get some sweet footage. I have the head mount as well.

I have only used my camera a few times, still learning what works best. I have both a head and chest mount. Each has it’s place. The chest mount works well when standing up while fishing. Being mounted to your chest makes the footage a bit more stabile than a head mount. You do need to watch hand position so you are not blocking the camera view.
The head mount is a better choice if you will be sitting, such as in a float tube or kayak. With the head mount you need to be aware of excessive head movement (particularly fast swings side to side). Also when holding up and releasing fish the camera and or your head need to angled a bit lower than you might expect in order to capture all the action.

I also have the newer gun mount or sportsman’s mount I think they call it. I plan to use that mount to clamp to my ice shelter frame and to the frame of my duck hunting blind.

So far, great suggestions. Dave the points about stability between the head and chest mounts and the head being higher profile in a kayak were exactly what I was thinking. That’s some good confirmation.

Apple GoPro killer could be coming soon

Looks like Apple wants a slice of the wearable camera action, based on recently awarded patents. The US Patents and Trademarks Office today awarded the iPhone maker a series of 34 patents, including one that details a GoPro-like action camera system.

Apple’s proposed invention would include a camera module, wireless communication systems, battery-operated power supply and a remote control. Based on drawings filed with the patent, the remote control module looks like a wrist-worn device, which displays the time and status indicators for battery and Wi-Fi levels. Presumably, the ocmpany’s wearable camera would communicate with its upcoming Apple Watch.

Filed in 2012, the patent also includes diagrams for a helmet mount and a bar mount for the digital camera, as well as some Kodak-branded material that the Cupertino company acquired in 2013. In its detailed description, Apple calls out action camera leader GoPro’s HD Hero2 devices, saying the latter’s single-camera setup could cause excessive wind resistance and could be more susceptible to damage and vibrations.

Even more impressive, parts of the patent indicate that the Apple system could record sound underwater in addition to dry land, making it superior to other devices on the market.

GoPro’s stock has taken a nosedive, falling 15 percent in an afternoon since Apple’s patent approval announcement. Apple has yet to make a statement about its potential action camera, and it’s still not clear when — or if — the company intends to launch such a product.

Pug, what makes you think anyone wants to see footage of you not catching fish?

We can always hope he can capture some “beach” footage.

There are plenty of other things to see Ryan, like foliage, palm trees, green grass, beaches, open water, etc, moon

Poor Apple, once a leader, now a follower. No thanks. I’ll never buy anything Scrapple unless it is for Michelle.

Now look what you made me do, I hijacked my own topic.

Another question is are you guys using 3rd party mounts or all GoPro. I haven’t been impressed with anything 3rd party yet and GoPros quality seems top notch.

Now I am off to buy GoPro stock now that it has artificially deflated.

I’m on my second season with go pros and have found out what I like while fishing or hunting. I’ll start off saying I haven’t bought any 3rd party mounts since I’m just anal like that. Here’s what I’ve figured out for myself:

    1) The flex clamp is the most versatile mount there is you can literally put that thing anywhere and it’s very strong and sturdy as long as what you clamp it to is sturdy obviously. Open water I clamp it to the gunwale, ice fishing is nice to clamp it anywhere in the shack for different angles.

    2) Handle bar mounts are a cheap way of getting done what the clamp could get done much faster. But, I like to have a handle bar mount always attached to my underwater pole so it’s “underwater ready” when the camera is attached. Also use the handle bar mount at the top of the rear light pole looking down on the boat, it covers all of the action going on in the boat the best I think, and it’s high enough where if you’re on a true honey hole, you can angle it down enough where the online detectives can’t figure out where exactly you’re fishing.

    3) I got the 3way mount on sale this year, it’s spendy retail price for what it is, but I really like using just the bottom tripod section for ice fishing so far this year, since it sits really low it’s almost like it’s on the ice but sitting sturdy. (I see with florida as your location this might not concern you pug ha but just through it on there in case anyone else was interested).

I started with just a handle bar and head mount and the head mount is good since you’re sure to capture everything, as long as you’re aware that you’re wearing it ha it’s not fun watching some head mounted shots when the camera user is moving swiftly in all directions! But also just a head mount can get boring, too. It’s fun to mix it up.

Being able to go home and watch a good day in the outdoors is an awesome way to re-live memories. waytogo

Sounds like the clamp will be my first mount. Then I might get a pole mount, since that can be used when walking and get some cool angles and perspective. Its also probably more fluid and possibly stable than using your hands.

I just got a go pro for Christmas along with a couple mounts (chest, handlebar). They are not go pro brand but seem like some pretty solid mounts, the handlebar mount seems like it would be really handy for the ice shack (I’ll find out this weekend). The brand is bracketron, if you go this route make sure you get the universal adapter as this is how it attaches to the mounts themselves.
