I just got a Calcutta TE300 and I see it has a pin on the spool to tie to while spooling up.

Do you guys still do the mono backing with these or straight to braid?

You can tie to the pin or I use a piece of tape because I don’t have pins. You only need the mono if the spool is too short to fill the reel.

Well, that’s the point of the pin I would think, so you don’t need the backing (no slip) but there still may still be a line burying issue?

I don’t think they ever claimed mono helped with the line burying?

It does help to get the line wrapped on tight at the bottom. Something like tie the line to a tree and go around another tree and let it all out then reel it back in with some resistance on it.

I think it all depends on what size of line you are going to spool. My Calcutta 400s’ have 65# and 80# with no mono, I used a small piece of electrical tape to start the line on the spools. But I had some smaller (I think 14#) line on a trolling reel that burried pretty badly.

On some other reels I’ve felt that having too thick of a layer of braid seemed a bit soft but it’s been a while since then, that was in the early days of braid…

    Thanks for the answers!

I still do the mono backing. It’s to clear out the lump of the pin. I just don’t like that pin.
