I got a great deal on a 6’6″ G Loomis musky jerk rod, and now need to outfit it with a reel and line. Any suggestions? I’m new to Musky fishing, so advice is appreciated.

Whats your price range? Id imagine your going to use it for jerkbaits since its a jerkbait rod?

Yes; I’ll be using it for Jerkbaits. I’m really open on the price range. I guess if I get some good idea’s in a moderate price, and some in a high price range, I can try to decide from there. Again; any and all input appreciated.

Go with abu garcia 6500 or 7000 some 80LB Cortland Blackspot and a good titanium leader.

i would recomend anything but abu garcia. havd had nothing but problems with the reel and the company. shimano is my best friend as i have broken about 10 abus and 0 shimano. tha track record says it all there and all i run for shimano is cardiffs which are only 100 bucks. if you have more money get a calcutta or get a daiwa luna. for line all i say is no spiderwire no matter who says what. lost too many lures on that junk. get power pro 100

ps my motto on the line is you can never be oversized with 100 lb. what happens by chance if u stumble upon the state record musky? don’t want anything bad to happen

The other shoe is I’ve seen people rip the hooks out of big northern/musky’s with 80-100 test and the drag cranked down as far as it goes.

But if your looking for a mid sized reel, the Cardiff works very well, I have two both spooled with Cortland 60# musky line and have had no problems.

If money is an issue I’d get a Shimano Corvalus, if it’s not I’d get a Calucutta TE.

For line I like Cortland 80 lbs, Thorne sells it in bulk and would probably spool a new reel bought from them for free. (I know they’ll spool a calcutta)

400TE with bronze back! a power handle also if you plan on throwing any tails. the weighted power handle not the normal power handle.

The live bait power handle only works on the regular Calcutta B’s or Cardiffs. The Calcuta TE will take either the Lucanas jig handle or the Trinidad 12/14 handle of which won’t allow the drag to fully back off.
