Floating Rods

Two weekends ago, a buddy caught a 40 inch fish at the cabin. He was trolling in his pontoon when the fish hit. It ripped his rod and the holder into the lake. He says when he looked back behind the boat, his rod was floating. He circled around and netted the rod and holder. Starts reeling it in, and the fish is still on. Catches a 40 incher. He claims he knew his rods floated, because he checked it out when he bought it (Garcia 5500). I would have never guessed a muskie rod with a reel on it would float.

This past Friday, my brother (Fritzee) hooked into a 45 inch fish that also pulled his rod out of the holder (didn’t have it closed) and into the lake. It also floated long enough for him to back up and pick it up before the line was tight enough for the fish to take it under. He reeled it in and catches a 45 inch fish.

I’d never heard of this happening, but to hear it 2 times within a week… Go figure.

Anyone else heard of this before?

I know a guy who found out that his St Croix Premier muskie rod and Abu 6500 C3 floated.

    It also floated long enough…

I believe that most are boyant, but will slowly sink.

I have fished my whole life and never lost a rod over the side. I have always thought a rod and reel would sink like a rock. Well, last month on Winnie I was fishing with my son who had a good one on. In the comotion I dumped a 7′ medium action rod with a Shimano 2500 series reel over the side. It took a few seconds for me to realize what I did and when I looked over the side of the boat I was suprised to see the rod mostly boyant but slowly sinking. I reached in half way to my elbow and grabbed it.

I imaging that the hollow blank and the cork handle keeps these rods floating.

Rods will NEVER just pop out of a Folbe rod holder, you set the rod in and they close automatically.

my buddy used to set all his rods in the back of his lund with rod holders and 1 day he casted and hooked his rod and threw it into the lake… that rod didn’t float and was a $400 combo. haha

I don’t feel like testing mine to see if they will float.

It seems to me with the size of some of the reels being used today they would sink like a rock.

Wouldn’t matter, for that price I’d wrap it in a PFD..:)

Not sure if mine float or not, nets on the other hand I know of at least two that didn’t….

I was thinking for 1200.00 it should have a auto cast and retrieve button and also have pictures of hot naked ladies on it.

Al, You can make that 3 nets that didn’t float.

Forget the pictures. For that much, it had better come with a hot naked lady to cast and retrieve it. When there’s a fish on, she can hand it to me. When I land the fish, she gets to tell me how incredibly sexy I looked while reeling in that huge fish.

If it came with a hot naked lady, I doubt fishing would be the thought of the moment, just saying it might not be…

    No Sheeite

I’ve even considered putting leashes on my more spendy combos, to prevent them from taking a swim

I can for a fact say that when a fishing partner (casting sideways) snags a st croix rod with a abu garcia CLW 6600 on it, that you have about 30-45 seconds to get to it before it sinks like the titanic…

I bet it is easier to retrieve if you are not rigging a sucker at the exact same time.
