Advice or tips

I’m heading to Namakagon / Cable, WI area in two weeks and my 13-year old wants to try some muskie fishing. I have some pike/muskie gear that he can handle and have thought about keeping the lures a little on the smaller side just to break him in. The rods we will be using all have Power Pro on them and I have a good assortment of leaders – flouro plus solid and stranded steel – flexible and rigid.

Any tips or advice on tackle or the lake? I have an assortment of topwaters, bucktails, swim baits and other misc. items to throw at them. I only get out after them once every few years.

    Thanks,
    Dave

There are some very nice Muskies in Namekagon and it’s a very beautiful lake as well. Big spinner baits fished off the deep shoreline cabbage work well. There are also some offshore humps and rock piles that hold nice fish. If you don’t move anything deep head very shallow in some of the bays and try smaller buck tails fished fast over weeds. Black, orange, and brown in my experience seem to be good colors to start with on the lake. If you need some more info feel free to PM me.

Open water trolling can actually be very good out there. Basically just pick one of the bowls/basins and drag 10″ jakes around aimlessly in the middle of the day. Lots of S turns can help. It’s sometimes boring, but it can be a good way to catch a big one!

I’ve seen a few nice fish there take a mepps purple giant killer buck tail. There are only a hundred other good lakes within easy driving distance of there too. Ask the bait shop where the hot bite is.

Thanks for the tips and advice. I’m looking forward to hitting some virgin waters and chasing a few toothy critters.

Yup. X2. I’ve also had good luck with showgirls over the tops of cabbage in 15-18′ or so.

Thanks guys. I will give the ski’s a shot but not sure how much time I’ll get to chase them. I’ve got some decent baits to throw and hoping to get one at least at the boat if not on and in for the oldest boy.

I’ll let you know how it went when I get back.
