rod holders

I am looking at getting a couple rod holders for trolling the Hayward area and the St. Louis. Wondering what ones people trust to not snap. I have heard of them snapping and talked with a few guys and they recommended the metal ones but I think they are ugly. Right now I am using the dog leash method just incase one breaks but would like to not feel like I have to do this.

    Thanks

Check out the Cannon rod holders really well built and I think Dean carries them.

Scotties. We use them with extensions for everything from walleyes to salmon on Lake Michigan. If a 21lb king salmon can’t break them, they’re not going to break.

Down east there ugly but they’ll take the abuse of 14″ jakes crashing into rocks dcg’s with 8oz of lead pulled at 5mph but if you want to use the leash method try one of the above listed rod holders. I wouldent trust my setups to anything less.

Scottys or Folbes!! My vote goes more toward the folbes. That’s what’ll be on my next boat.

I’ve got both and I love the Folbe’s, but I may try the scotties this year so I can troll more than 2 rods. On my last boat I had nothing but Rams and they were awesome IMHO I think you’d be set with either one of these 3 choices

Sorry Joel, the scottys do break. But it took the gf crashing into the dock to do it… but she was “barely moving” , you can ask her. Told her to stay out in the harbor as i parked. Women and kids, just dont listen huh.

Ouch! How many rod holders wouldn’t break when the weight and mass of the entire boat is put on them against a pier?

They don’t float either by the way as a client of mine demostrated awhile back.

Seriously though, when it comes to rod holders, there are a lot of good choices out there. Scotties, Ram’s, Folbes, Cannons, I don’t think you will be disappointed with any of those brands. They’re all good!

The Folbe’s were designed for Salmon and White Sturgeon out West. I ‘spose they could break too, just that I haven’t heard of one breaking from the guys I know that have them.

They’re great for 30-40 pound Flatheads but we use an open bail for them. We catch channel cats in the 5 to 15 pound range and our rods are bent over…and the Folbe’s work terrific. Using one or even seeing one in person generally converts a person over to Folbes. Certainly not cheap, but then the best seldom is.

Check them out next time your down to Everts.

PS my FW and FD love them!

how would someone mount one of these rod holders in a 12-14′ alumacraft, or would a muskie rip it right off of the rail?

Down east rod holders might not look the best but easily the strongest out there, and extremely versatile!! it says something when most full time musky guides all over the country who troll any amount use them! hope this helps you out.

The down east holders are offerd in a clamp style.

they have many different mounting styles but the clamp-on would work great! you wouldn’t have to worry about it coming off at all.

I have been in plungepool’s boat and I think the Folbe’s he had were the cat’s . Ease of operation was second to none.

You can get the Down Easts in galvanized or painted Black. I have the black ones. Don’t look ugly to me, and since I paid for them it’s only my opinion that counts any way.

I don’t understand how a rod holder will break from hooking a big fish or even a snag. Unless you have your drag LOCKED, which I’ve not heard of when trolling, any undue resistance should be taken care of with a proper drag setting. Am I way off base here?
