    Jarad,
Thanks, but I will pass on the pizzing match.

Quick note: It’s a quibble, but it’s Jared.

Second note: it wasn’t so much a pizzing contest as it was a playful contest…

But fair enough… and yeah, I know musky baits are spendy… I’ve seen the 3-tailed 2# monsters up at Fleet Farm. Wow. It’s a whole different world.

OK, I’ll eat a little crow for a musky fishing excursion! Besides, I threw down the gauntlet, can’t very well pick it back up again…

As for lakes… I’m a couple blocks from lower, middle and upper Twin near Robbinsdale (Hwy 100 crosses between lower and middle just north of 81). I’m 10 minutes from Eagle, 15 minutes from Medicine, 20 from Wirth.

What kind of beer do you prefer?

If you’re in SLP, it’d probably be way easier to take 100 north to the France Ave exit, take a left off the exit and drive to the t, left again 1 block to the park on Middle Twin. There’s a big beach and playground there, perfect for a contest like this. This lake is small, but it’s only about 7 minutes north of 394…

Someone tape this I wanna see this LOL. Go easy on him Tim thow something small, mag dawgs to start, move up to the 13″ Curlie Sues after an hour, pounders after 2 hours, 2 pounders after 3 hours, if he makes it past the first hour……. I’ll let him use my Muskie Innovations rod even that will tire him out faster throwing that anchor of a rod.

Hey Jared, I could do Monday after work and don’t worry I’ll take it easy on you. You don’t have to huck the 2pounder if you don’t want to but it’s kind of cool to say you have.

Jared, There’s a HUGE difference between a 7lb cat fish and a muskie, even a small one

A muskie could eat that fish for breakfast, and go back for seconds

Plus you’re not putting a muskie up on plane, and skiing it in

On second though you might if you had the Trinidad

For that matter we could take my pontoon over to Eagle lake where they actually have muskie…

Either way, I’ll PM you my phone # so you can give me a call when “after work” happens and we can figure it out from there.

Oh, and if we do go out in the boat, I’ll bring the beer.

    I wasn’t comparing a 7# cat to a muskie… I was comparing it to pulling in a musky bait.

In thinking about it tho, there’s no way a spinning reel could pull a load as efficiently as a bait caster. As my brain kicked in on the subject it dawned on me that pulling the line directly with the spool rather than using a rotating arm to wrap the line around the spool is always going to be easier. Dunno what I was thinkin…

Either way, tho, I’m gonna step up for my little contest with Tim… if nothing else it’ll be a learning experience for me and a chance to do something I’ve never done before.

    Jarad,
Good luck with your contest with Tim. I think you’re gonna need it. Maybe he’ll share some of the Molson with you.

The biggest muskie lure I’ve seen at the Fleet Farm in Hudson is the pounder (1 tail). I want to check out the 2 lbers, so I’ll have to check again.

You may want to wait a few weeks for the season to open if your going to go to a lake with muskies in it.

LMAO, OK so maybe it was the 1 pounder… there’s a little fishing tackle shop off 169 just north of Fleet Farm, maybe they have the 2-pounder. Then again it’s also possible I just haven’t ever seen one but the others are so huge I’m making assumptions.

The most I’ve ever cast wtih was a 12-oz bullhead and a 6-oz sinker, which is just over a pound. That much I can imagine casting and retrieving. Twice that? Muskie guys are just plain crazy.

Anyone use the ABU Garcia 7000 series reels for this? How well do they hold up? Just curious since they are a bit less than most of the other reels that have been posted here. I used one two years ago and it seemed to work well – that was using the DCG 10’s or 12’s.

    Thanks,
    Dave

The old red7000 abu (made in sweden) were built like tanks the new ones (made in china) will crap out in a week. For just a few $$ more you could get a diawa saltist 20 for $170 where I think the 7000 run $140. And with the saltist you can really burn a bucktail with the 6:2.1 gears.

You can burn with a 20? I thought you had to go with the 30TH or 40TH if you wanted to have enough line retrieve to really burn big blades.

You’ll be able to smoke blades with a 20 the gears and spool size are the same as the 30 the 30 is just a bigger frame. Both reels pickup 36″ per crank.

Yep. The 20 Saltist will do the trick easily. I have a 30 and 20, the 20 is much easier to use just because of it’s size. Originally I didn’t think it would hole enough line but I was wrong, it holds plenty of 100Lb. Masterbraid.

Ok. I was under the impression that you wanted to have 40″+ of line per crank to really burn double 10s. The Saltist 30TH says it pulls 47″ per crank.

So you’re saying that I’ll be fine to pull double 10s with my Abu 6600 C4 (Swedish made, not Chinese) with only 36″ of line/crank and a 6.3:1 ratio?

I just got a Diawa Saltist from the Musky Shop and I cant wait to use it this year. It has a 47.2″ line retrieval per turn. Its just a bit faster than the Shimano Trinidad 16N but I like the fact that there is a levelwind on it and its about 150.00 cheaper.

I had a Saltist 40HA with the level wind and I HATED it

The one thing I found was there is serious a loss of casting distance compared to the Trinidad DC Due to the fact that in order to not create a backlash, you have to tighten the cast control knob almost all the way down

I have the 30, and love it, with levelwind and cast just as far as my buddy with the Trinidad. Hmmm I have a beard too. Might be on to something Bob

Just FYI – Tim got his beer and I got an education in reel technology and big game hunting. Also a new piercing in the palm of my hand (note to self: never try to grab a 2# muskie lure as it swings past hanging off the end of the rod!)

    Thanks Tim!

IMHO I think it’s easier to throw the nonlevel wind rather than the level wind, simply because if you get a backlash with the nonlevel wind, it comes out very easily b/c you don’t have to contend with the level wind levelwind

Like Tim said Trinidad all the way baby

Last year Tim was gracious enough to let me take his new 16 DC for a spin

Holy cow that reel is like the rolex of reels

I honestly thought we may have to go to blows in order for him to get it back

    I don’t think I would blow anyone for a reel….
