What is the consensus for a good sucker rod? I think I want a very stiff one peice fiberglass rod. We generally use quick strike rigs hung over the side of the boat. Had two fish lost this fall due to not being able to get hooks loose from the sucker and set into a jaw.

Funny guy.. I am seriously in the market for a couple of rods for chasing musky in the fall. I had been using some 2 peice whuppin sticks but they just don’t have enough backbone. They are perfect for trolling but not so hot for dragging suckers with the wind. We run 12-16 inch suckers most of the time. I’ve seen graphite rods explode into a million peices on hook sets. Looking for some inexpensive sucker specific pool cues in fiberglass or a combo fiberglass graphite like an ugly stick. Doesn’t anyone have a rod they like for this application?

Just go with a little bit shorter graphite rod around the 7′ or so range. A quality rod shouldn’t ever shatter and if it does almost all the manufacturers will cover them under warranty.

The Gander Mt. guide series rods work great.

My muskie trolling/Sucker rods are the 7′ MH Ugly Stick Tiger rods

They are rated for 3/4 – 8oz. It’s light enough to work a sucker rig, but it’s heavy enough to set the hook into there jaws of steel

Never shattered a good rod yet, I don’t sucker fish though but do fish in the extreme cold and my Loomis, Thorne Bros customs are still going strong. I’m sure if the cold affected them to the point of breaking the 13oz Curlie Sues in 20 degrees would do it but so far no problems.

Thanks ski dudes.. I am a huge fan of Ugly stick rods for catfishing. I will check out the tiger and see if that does it for me.
