Hey fellow Musky guys, I need to borrow a little of your expertise.

Right now I’m finishing up my last year of a composite materials engineering degree. As part of a senior design project, I’m building a walk the dog style bait (similar to a Jackpot, Weagle, Etc) out of composite materials (we’ll probably use carbon fiber).

Anyways, one of the requirements for this project is to get input from knowlegable people that would potentially use said product.

We made up a bit of a survey that I’ll post on here that you guys could fill out. Or else if you just want to give me any input as far as features or improvements that you’d like to see on such a bait that would be great. Length, weight, hooks size, color patterns, etc.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I’ll let you guys know how the bait turns out when we actually get to make it next semester. That probably wont be until late April though, so I hope everyone is patient.

    Thanks again.

Survey – “walk the dog” style topwater bait.

    1. Walk us through a typical session using the product.

    2. What do you like about the existing products?

    3. What do you dislike about the existing products?

    4. What issues do you consider when purchasing the product?

    5. What improvements would you make to the product?

    6. How many hooks/what size of hooks would you like to see on the product?

    7. What colors/patterns would you like to see available?

    8. What size should this product be (length)?

    9. What is the highest amount that you would pay for such a product?

For each of the following, please indicate on a scale f 1 to 5 how important the feature is to you. Please use the following scale:

    1. Feature is undesirable. I would not consider a product with this feature.
    2. Feature is not important, but I would not mind having it.
    3. Feature would be nice to have, but is not necessary.
    4. Feature is highly desirable, but I would consider a product without it.
    5. Feature is critical; I would not consider a product without this feature.

    1. Bait is durable (survives impacts with objects (rocks, dock, etc), musky bites.

    2. Bait is good at hooking Muskies.

    3. Bait is available in a wide variety of colors.

    4. Bait is easy to work/has a good action.

    5. Bait casts far.

    6. Bait is guaranteed for life.

    7. The bait’s finish to remains looking new after extended use.

    8. The bait has internal rattles.

Survey – “walk the dog” style topwater bait.

    1. Walk us through a typical session using the product.

Wake up late to Bob laying on the horn outside the house, stop at SA or Holiday and scavenge something from the roller grill, back the trailer in but forget to roll up the truck windows after parking, huck Dunwright baits all day, catch a few fish on them, 15 minutes before it is completely dark in the evening decide that it is finally time to try a topwater, cast it for 5, then put a Dunwright back on.

    2. What do you like about the existing products?

The look they generate on Bob Meisikomer’s face when he misses or loses a giant fish on one.

    3. What do you dislike about the existing products?

The look they generate on my face when I miss or lose a fish on one

    4. What issues do you consider when purchasing the product?

Global warming, healthcare in America, public school funding, the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world in 2012.

    5. What improvements would you make to the product?

Make them bigger with a deeper profile, not just cigar shaped.

    6. How many hooks/what size of hooks would you like to see on the product?

Considering the low hookup percentage, I would like to see roughly 20-30 5/0 hooks hanging off the thing (and if you can pull that off, you should include a long handled needle nose with each purchase).

    7. What colors/patterns would you like to see available?

Silver (metallic), pearl white, traffic cone orange, raw chicken pink, and miniature poodle.

    8. What size should this product be (length)?

Most are 6″ +/- (that’s average), however I know most big girls prefer something larger, perhaps 8″, 10″, or even 12″.

    9. What is the highest amount that you would pay for such a product?

Is this a question that even applies to muskie fisherman?

    1. Bait is durable (survives impacts with objects (rocks, dock, etc), Jet Skiers musky bites. 5

    2. Bait is good at hooking Muskies. 5 (Good luck, WTD baits are notorius low percentage hookups unless it gets engulfed

    3. Bait is available in a wide variety of colors. 2 (two rules; bright colors everyday, solid black\brown once and awhile)

    4. Bait is easy to work 3 (every bait runs different, even if it came from the exact same mold) /has a good action. 5 (it needs to “chug” on every swing)

    5. Bait casts far. 1 (it would only inspire me to cast it off on a wicked backlash)

    6. Bait is guaranteed for life. 3 (or as long as the manufacturer who made it is still in business)

    7. The bait’s finish to remains looking new after extended use. 4 (WTD baits get hook rash, be cool if you could solve that problem)

    8. The bait has internal rattles. 2 (would be nice, but the water movement is what grabs the fishes attention)

Haha, thanks for the input Dan.

I think my team will get a kick out of this one.
