Saturday AM Storms

This morning was full of fronts and storms and the fish were on the move. Dan and I hit the water early, and found the fish to be moving right from the get go. Dan had our first fish up, and it was a good one. The fish came to the boat hot and turned away at the last second. We marked her on the GPS and left for about 20 minutes. We came back, and on Dan’s first cast on the GPS mark, the fish came back in, and once again turned away. This was a upper 40 inch fish, and it just would not close the deal. We made a few more passes over the fish but it never showed itself again. We decided to work some deep weed edges, weed edges that were getting pounded by wind. The wind was the key today! Fish the weeds on the windy side of the lake and we were on fish. Fingers, flats, and inside corners were the ticket for us today. Both fish came on a walleye colored Dunwright Lifelike and ate on the splash down, the bait hit the water, and got hammered. It was an interesting day, being chased off the water a few times with storms, and finding active fish in between fronts. It was a great day on the water, with a great friend, good to have you back in the boat Bro

The pleasure was all mine, good to get out and take pictures of your fish again. I don’t think it is a horseshoe you have lodged internally, but perhaps a whole box of Lucky Charms! The two different fish following in the span of 5 casts was classic! If not for the wind I expect you might have been able to close the deal on at least one, if not both.

By the way, nice call on the old ice fishing spot, it’s like you can smell muskies or something…

I will bring milk and a spoon along next time

I think the old ice fishing spot has a lot more to offer up

We spend a lot of time with the drift sock in the water, it is amazing how much that big sock slows the drift and makes the boat stable in those bigger waves.

I also got to take a much needed nap for an hour in the truck, thanks to the lightning. After that, it was game on

Bob, since you only seem to need one lure you might as well give me all the other ones you don’t use Nice fish!

Hey Dan, how many times did I change baits Saturday

We ran small Salmo skinners, twitching them over the tops of the weed. We ran big blades, over and through the weeds. Jerks, gliders, grinders, at one point Dan called me “Bobby the bait changer”. I was having a very hard time finding confidence in anything. The weather was RIGHT and I could not get a single follow. Finally Dan said, just put on that Walleye and stick with it. Good advice, and I should have listened sooner

Bob I will say that you did go through a period of “adjustment”, at one point there were no less then a dozen baits on the floor up front . But considering you fished the lake maybe once last year, and twice the year before, I suppose every musky guy would deal with a bout of the second guesses from time to time. The old patterns we had out there are hard to abandon, I know they are for me, hence I picked up those couple of impulse buy blade selections at Thorne on Friday. The fact of the matter is that in the metro, with the walleye stalking that goes on, and a stalked walleyes propensity to relate to weeds, the Dunwright of that pattern should be the obvious choice.

Nice fish buddy. I’m sure you two knuckleheads in the boat felt “right” again.

    You have no idea

To have this trip on our “old” home body of water, made it that much better. I sure miss fishing out there, just don’t miss that drive at 4-am with all the deer.

    Great job Bob & Dan!!!

Funny thing was how disappointed I was when a friend called me and said they are just HOT RIGHT NOW!!! And of course I can’t get out for even the evening bite. He had moved six fish and boat two also. Nothing huge, but the best day of the musky season so far has to have been Sat. and especially in the a.m. First major heat followed by first major cold front.

After having worked R&H both Sat & Sunday, even with the WMT having tourneys both days and the PMTT being in Eagle River this weekend. I have only heard a few reports with the best being Sat. a.m.!!!
