I recently had a short conversation with a bass angler who fishes local tourneys in Sturgeon and Green Bay. This conversation quickly led to muskie and while he doesn’t pursue them, he swears that every boat in an early May tourney on Sturgeon, has seen a muskie that would have to be a 100# class fish, the last 2 consecutive years of the tourney. He himself, has had muskies at his boat that measured mid 50’s and he said this particular female (we both assumed) was significantly longer and the girth was unbelieveable. Everyone has tossed their little tubes and such at it but of course, catching the fish in closed season would never qualify anyway. After this was told, a friend of his piped up and said, “yeah, I know this guy, makes all his own lures, nothing shorter than 30″ and he swears the fish are out there, he just hasn’t found the secret to getting one to the boat.”
So, we all know there’s no shortage of rumors and tall tails, but if by chance, there’s any truth to these stories, what do you think the issue is? Lure? Location? or both?
What kinda bothers me is……back in the hayday of muskie records, they were catching these monsters on Suicks and Spoons. Why do we “never” have anything CPR’d between 60-69″ on the same lures today? It seems there are some missing links to the claims being made but if indeed these fish are out there, as the esox jaws found in Green Bay would suggest, what’s your theory on why we’re failing to hook into fish in excess of 60″? Just looking to have a little fun with what could be a serious topic.
