Just returned from a trip to MN near Leech Lake. Musky fishing was good. I arrived on 7/25 after my Dad had been there for a week to establish a pattern. Trolling was the name of the game and we boated 14 fish from 33″ to 42″ in two weeks. my dad was fishing solo most of the time the first week so he didn’t get as many. He did have one day where he got 4 in the boat and lost another. We had lots of hits and lost fish too.
Fish prefered bull dawgs trolled about 2 1/2 to 3mph in open water. Never had a musky hit as hard as the hit those things. Almost had a 36″ take the rod out of my hand… that’ll wake you up Down side was that bull dawgs are $15 a pop and some of them got tore up before they ever caught a fish. We were able to repair a few with some PVC glue but still went through 6-8 lures that are no longer usable. Also got some nice pike the biggest being 37″.
Fish were definitly the most active during the middle of the day. We found that casting structure produced some active fish in the evening as well. We couldn’t capitalize on most of them however… kind of wierd actually. lost a lot more fish casting than trolling. Different lures possibly?
I’ll try and get some pics up soon
