Opener started off with a big bang for the owner of Dunwright Tackle, Dan Vogel. I got an invite to join him and his crew for the opening weekend. We had one plan of attack, and that was to get his new baits in the water and run them through the paces. Well it did not take long for Dan Vogel to set the bar for the weekend and he set it high. Just prior to 10am he locked up with this nice 48″ fish. The fish was in about 8-10 feet of water, and put up one heck of a fight. Being very close to deep water, this fish wasted no time heading for the depths. After a couple of strong power runs see fell into the big net. First of the year, and first fish on his new baits. Way to go Dan
Over the balance of last week I was able to put some time on the water. On Tuesday afternoon I got to spend the day with fellow IDO’er Brad Juaire. We had a great day on the water, but never managed to set hooks into anything other then pike. This day we did manage to have 9 lookers. A few came to the boat really hot, but not a single one was ready to eat. With the bulk of our fish moving during the middle of the day, we thought that the evening would be on fire. We thought wrong! As day light got less, so did the fish activity. Keying in on the feeding windows is a must to put them in the net, and we just did not make it happen on Tuesday, but thats fishing.
I made it back out later in the week for a very early morning outing. I had the lake to myself for about the first 2 hours. Getting out of bed at 3am and on the lake at 3:45am, I wasted no time going back to fish that Brad and I had GPS’d. This put 2 fish in the boat for me this morning, a 39″ and a 41″. Both comming early, right around day break. When I have a fish follow, I always make it on the GPS, and come back and work those fish. Sometimes in the same day, sometimes days later. Both of these fish were sitting on the weed edge in about 12 feet of water. Both fish ate the new Dunwrights. I have put a lot of time on the water so far this year, and I am really happy with what I have seen so far from these baits. Happy hunting
