My Dad & I went out Saturday morning looking for some Bluegill action. We anchored up on one of our better spots and proceeded to catch some nice sized Bluegills.
About halfway through the morning my Dad set the hook on a bite and started reeling in what he thought was a Bluegill. What had actually happened was the Bluegill was eaten by a Pike the moment my Dad set the hook. When the Pike came by the boat, just out of net range, we couldn’t see the Bluegill, just a big’ol toothy critter. About 30 seconds after it came by the boat, the line broke.
After retying and fishing for about an hour, my Dad once again sets the hook on a Bluegill and immediately has a large Pike roll and eat it. Persistant buggers…. This fish comes by the boat, again out of range of the net. It makes a hearty run and jumps clear out of the water spitting the Bluegill in the process.
So, out of frustration, my Dad rigs up a Bluegill patterened swimjig and starts boiling water. In no time, a Pike hammers the swimjig at boatside and the fight is on. A few tense moments later, a 31″ 8lb Pike is laying on the boat floor.
If you look closely in the pics, you can see what looks like a Bluegill in the fish’s belly.
We had a great morning on the water, even with the river on a steady rise. The Bluegills are still in their spawning areas and the Pike on a full tilt feeding frenzy as my Mother had another large Pike eat one of her Bluegills Saturday afternoon.
