This year I’m going to do some experimenting trolling for muskies on Mille Lacs via open water trolling with the use of planer boards. I will be targeting different depths in the water column and I’m considering using a line counter reel. I also realize that I may not need one because who knows how deep some of these muskie baits run and there are no depth curves available. However, I would like to keep some consistency in my presentation. Would a Shimano Tekota (500) work? I have three of these already for walleye fishing and could re-spool. If so, could I spool this with 80 lb. powerpro??? Any other suggestions on line counter reels?
Also, what rod would you recommend? I’m a big St. Croix fan and that would be my top choice but I’m not sure which one I would need for this type of presentation.
