As I was sitting on the couch last weekend dreaming of open water watching some guys sail fishing, I got to wondering about applying some saltwater tactics to the might musky. This has probably been talked about some here before, but what the heck. It’s spring fever time.
One thing I’ve witnessed many boats doing for sail fish is pulling teaser lures, many times without hooks. Once the fish are spotted, the teasers are brought in ahead of the actual baits. I don’t think this exact tactic would work for ski’s while trolling because I don’t believe we are sight fishing.
However, I do wonder how a formation of teaser like baits making large amounts of surface noise pulled just ahead of your actual baits. Our teasers would have to be hookless of course due to the MN limit of one rod per angler. In my simple theory, as the fish come up to investigate the commotion, they would have to pass the actual baits and probably would be enticed to bite, whether it’s a spinner bait or crankbait.
I could imgaine the amount of TIPS calls one would generate as he trolled the north end of Mille Lacs with 6-8 rods sticking out the back of the boat. So, any legal issues with pulling hookless attractants around in MN?? Any thoughts on this, anyone tried it?
